A rampaging 25 metre sprint to score by Ipswich SHS lock Kane Self broke open today’s Langer Trophy game against Mabel Park SHS, which reigning premiers Ipswich won 38-16.

The try by the crash-running Self came with 18 minutes left, opened the floodgates for the reigning national champions as they crossed for four tries in the dying minutes in the 22-point blowout.

It also followed a pivotal four-pointer for Ipswich Grammar convert David Leota.

Leota used his powerful leg drive to mow down the last line of defence and crash over, moving Ipswich ahead 22-16 after the two teams had been deadlocked for the start of the second half.

For a period there, it was anyone’s game.

Canterbury signed Self cut back on his inside and used that left hand of his to palm off his defender. In the space of two minutes, a 16-16 ball game had swung in Ipswich’s favour and the champs were clinical enough to close out the game- courtesy of a 52nd minute dagger by diving dummyhalf Tyler Peckham-Harris. And then a final score by Self, his second, when centre LJ Nonu went blind side on a quick tap.

Earlier, the threatening Mabel found the scoreboard first. Five- eighth Lachlan Buchbach held up the pass then found fullback Ryan McCann who was bursting through the line.

If the first half was anything to go off, Mabel are real contenders this year. No.14 Braxton Wilson- Clune and Cooper Day were tryscorers, following huge efforts up front from Alex Leapai, Orlando Levi and Xyon Purcell. Out wide, jinking centre Jaycob Kingston-Francis and halfback Jackson Howe looked dangerous.

Indeed Mabel won the first 40 minutes, but in the final third visitors Ipswich found a sixth gear and ran away with it.

Walters Cup wrap

Mabel Park SHS had a rollicking return to Walters Cup on Thursday at Langlands Park with a triumphant 36-0 running over of Stretton State College.

Stretton were brave to the core and despite the scoreboard mounting, this year’s Walters Cup new additions still had their legs pumping to the final hooter.

But Mabel started with a bang and like a fire they could not be put out. It was 26-0 at the break after Majah Jose Peachey, Coen Clancy, Riley Baker and Dom Ierome did the ground work in the forwards.

Centre Dean Tauaa and king communicator Tawa-Dean Simpkins made sure their hard working forward pack were rewarded when the ball swung their way.

Ierome scored first, then the tryscoring Tuaaa who is always near the action.

A lucky bounce saw Mabel move ahead 16-0, then Peachey scored perhaps the try of the season.

It wasn’t a special backline move but instead an unstoppable run from the right touchline, back to the middle and through multiple defenders.

He slammed the ball down emphatically and threw it up in the air as if to say – someone try stop me.

It was a highlight, which was followed by another thanks to the swift hands of Tauaa who put winger Frank Collins over.

In the second half, two tries from Mabel saw them come away 36-0 winners – a Francis Pepe try and Tauaa’s second showing vast improvements from this exciting Mabel outfit.

To Stretton’s credit, they slowed Mabel down in the second half. It was just an overwhelming forward pack and a bit of zip which proved the difference.
