Mabel Park SHS secured a top two finals berth after mounting an ambush win in a historic first Langer Trophy match played at the school’s No.1 oval.
Mabel Park won an arm wrestle 18-4 over Keebra Park SHS, with a burrowing charge from interchange forward Xyon Purcell 18 minutes from fulltime a big step toward victory, and then a try from hooker Jordan Kake 90 seconds from the end confirming the result.
Kake had followed a high bomb, which was spilled by Keebra Park, leading to a try and sparking wild celebrations.
Keebra Park’s bid for victory was hampered by their handling in greasy conditions, although they did produce some cast iron defence, conceding just two tries until Kake’s try from a kick.
What started in blazing heat, finished in wet and cool conditions, with spectators who had started off sheltering from the sun found themselves cowering from the rain.
The match changed complexion as well, with Keebra Park starting off like a train, only for Mabel Park to gain parity the further the match went on.
Keebra Park right centre Dorian Lotaki powered over for the first try of the game, a bustling burst in the right corner made possible by his team’s sustained middle forward dominance.
But against the run of play Mabel Park centre Lehi Thomas swept onto an intercept to run 90m to score.
At the time Keebra Park’s right side was locked and loaded for another tilt at the try line and a 10-0 deficit looked certain until Thomas’ anticipation finished with an exciting try.
Downfield he went, running toward a sea of supporters who roared him home. Mabel was unexpectedly ahead 6-4.
They then went toe-to-toe in the second half, winning a tough, tight contest off the back of a side controlled well by halves Lachlan Buchbach and Jackson Howe.

WALTERS CUP
Keebra Park SHS warmed up for the upcoming Walter Cup finals ahead with a powerful win over Mabel Park SHS.
Keebra scored 24 points straight to win 30-10 after Mabel Park got on the scoreboard early when hooker Francis Pepeto dived over.
But Keebra Park changed the momentum of the game and took full advantage of field position, turning a 4-0 deficit into a 12-4 lead, then 18-4 at halftime.
Keebra Park then scored early in the second half, although to Mabel Park’s credit they went set for set with their rivals despite being 20 points down.
Keebra Park also scored late, a determined drive from their halfback.
Mabel Park’s reward was a sensational late try to prop Dominic Ierome who reeled in a cross kick from Kalei Greenwood to score under the posts.
Earlier, there was a brilliant effort from Keebra Park five eight Jake De Cloux who charged down a kick 40m out, and scooped up the following ball to score.
Then Keebra capitalised on Mabel being down a man, courtesy of a sin-binning, to work a beautiful forwards move that saw the side crash over next to the posts. Cooper Murphy’s two conversions made it 12 points.
Beautiful ball play by De Cloux then gave ace fullback David Bryenton a sniff down the left side, and his dancing feet did the rest close to the line. It was 18-4 following Murphy’s conversion from wide out.

ROUND 6 REPLAYS
Meanwhile, Mabel Park SHS will confront life without their forward battleship, prop Alex Leapai (concussion) who is being rested from the match after his heavy knock against Marsden last week
In his place comes Ocean Tavitai. who will be playing in his second Langer Trophy game of the season.
Tavita, who is originally from New Zealand, has the runs on the board to confront a strong Keebra Park SHS pack.
Keebra Park’s forwards feature South Coast representatives left, right and centre - with Jack Schmidt, Isaiah Fagalilo, Jett Bryce, Zac Kumbamong and Presley Folau all playing.
They will look to hit back hard after last week’s loss to arch rivals, Palm Beach Currumbin, and provide talented halfback Ryder Williams with a platform to work off.
But it is a delicious battle of the outside backs which looms large.
Mabel Park have lightning quick fullback Ryan McCann, electric wingers Tyrese Tovao and Elijah Tagiilima as well as the emerging Jaycob Kingston-Francis.
And they will confront Keebra’s elegant fullback Mason Barber, powerhouses Jeremiah Havea and Joseph Tupuse, Xavier Tauaifaiga and speedster Zyroam Herlihy.
Wow, what a match up.
