Brisbane Broncos had their hands all over this one as Marsden issued a warning to their Langer Trophy rivals by putting last year’s national champions to the sword. Relive all the action.

The future of the Brisbane Broncos was glimpsed at the North Ipswich Reserve when contracted halfback Coby Black and winger Saxon Innes combined for the try of the season in Marsden State High School’s 30-12 victory over Ipswich State High.

Innes retrieved a kick 15 metres out from his own line, returned it to centre field before a deadly sidestep saw him plunge through two defenders and scorch away down the midfield.

On his hip in support was Wynnum-Manly Seagulls club teammate Black, who finished the try which moved Marsden ahead 20-6 just shy of the halftime break.

Innes is a light stepper and possesses freakish speed – and that’s why he is one of the Langer Trophy’s best finishers.

Earlier, Ipswich hit the scoreboard first through centre LJ Nonu after an Izzy Mafi bomb bounced into his grasp. They led 6-0, but quickly Marsden found their groove once Queensland Schoolboys centre Will Semu dotted one down.

Black then slotted a penalty goal, and made a tremendous trysaving cover tackle on prolific Ipswich winger Alton Naiyep, who was brought down a metre shy of the line.

Marsden turned this pressure situation into a score and a subsequent eight-point-buffer when a trademark Lewis Symonds offload put Patrick Kailahi in under the posts.

Marsden led 20-6 at the break after that spectacular try to end the first, and then 24-6 when Symonds scored a try of his own eight minutes into the second half.

This time it was a hard run from centre Kylem Vunipola, and an inside step from the explosive Xavier Atoa, which undid the Ipswich defence.

A try was just what the doctor ordered for the home side and it was darting dummy-half Lesayne Tuiasau who was the man for the job.

It was a four-pointer which swung momentum back in Ipswich’s favour, but they would rue not making the most of their opportunities when they had possession close to Marsden’s line.

Atoa then put the nail in the coffin at 30-12 when he planted a deft grubber kick impressively engineered in field by Semu, who was in full stride down the left touchline.

Trusty Ipswich forwards Oliva Iaulualo, Kane Self and David Leota were tireless, while Tyler Peckham-Harris added a punch out of hooker in a loss which will serve as motivation heading into the quarter finals on August 9.

WALTERS CUP

Marsden oozed class in their dominant 32-0 victory over Stretton College.

The Makos ran in six tries, and left two out there when their final two tries were disallowed.

They were in fine form, with quick ball out of dummy half from Tayshaarn Tonga, and deadly finishing from winger Quinn Timperon delivering the win at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Line breaks came hard and fast, and once they scored their first, it looked a done deal for the well-oiled Logan side, which was certainly boosted by a quick-thinking fullback in Caleb Cresswell.

REPLAY: Stretton College v Marsden SHS (Walters)

Cresswell scored the try of the day with a chip and chase that left the Stretton defenders stunned.

Stretton were game, but Marsden had a ton of possession and a strong connection between their offloading forwards and their impressive backs.

Centre Antonio Okusitino, five-eighth Jack Hepi Simon, Timperon (two tries), Cresswell and interchange forward Frontier Wiperi were try scorers for Marsden.

Ipswich SHS are riding a five-game winning streak, Marsden SHS have been the pacesetters for much of the year - something has to give in Wednesday’s marquee Langer Trophy match-up.

This will be the last match of the regular season before all eight teams assemble on August 9 at Bishop Park (Norths) in a playoff between teams one through eight.

If all goes well for these two teams, they may be meeting again on August 23 at Langlands Park, this time for much, much bigger stakes - the Grand Final.

WILL SEMU (MARSDEN) V LJ NONU (IPSWICH)

Two of the competition’s strongest centres will be on a collision course at North Ipswich Reserve.

Queensland Schoolboys representative, and arguably one of the most improved players all season, Semu is an awfully strong and quick centre.

Not unlike Semu, Nonu has a good turn of speed and powerful leg drive.

SAXON INNES (MARSDEN) V ALTON NAIYEP (IPSWICH)

Saxon Innes and Kylem Vunipola at Marsden SHS.

Innes is the speed machine who will be hard to stop if he gets in space. Watch for Coby Black to put him through a hole.

Naiyep on the other hand is also very quick, but a brutal ballrunner who will help Ipswich get onto the front foot when coming out of their half.

LEWIS SYMONDS (MARSDEN) V KANE SELF (IPSWICH)

Broncos-signed Symonds is an interesting player, a ball-playing lock who can threaten with his own runs, or link the forwards with the backs.

He could have easily been a Queensland Schoolboys representative.

His opposite number is Newcastle-contracted Kane Self, who is a very good player also.

Self is a toiler, a workhorse whose defence and carries from in close will break down the Marsden defences.

There’s a good chance Jack Laing starts at lock, with Self an almighty bench-boost.
