It was a massive day for Palm Beach Currumbin as the big guns flexed their muscles in the AFLQ Schools Cup SEQ semifinals at Heritage Stadium.

The Gold Coast sporting behemoth was represented in all four divisions - and came away with wins in every match, three of them convincingly.

All the semifinal winners from Tuesday have now qualified for the state finals on October 13 to 15.

PBC will be launching a four-pronged attack in the junior male and female and senior male and female divisions.

The junior male and both senior sides go into the deciders in electric form, conceding just 28 points between them in the semifinals.

The junior female team had a much tougher assignment and had to hold on late before seeing off St Teresa’s Catholic College 48-37.

While PBC stole the limelight, they weren’t the only multiple winners.

St Laurence’s won their senior and junior male games while Varsity showed their class in the two female games.

Helensvale also picked up double success and will pose a big threat in the two junior grand final matches.

PREVIEW

Heavyweights PBC will feature in all four age divisions while Helensvale SHS, Varsity College, Marymount College and St Laurence’s College managed to qualify two teams.

St Teresa’s Catholic College head coach Kellie Barker said her junior female team, which has a mix of grade seven, eight and nine students, is up for the challenge.

“They have fought hard through the round games when, at times, they were missing some key players,” she said.

“They are a great bunch of girls, on and off the field, and the way they have represented St Teresa’s has made myself and the other coach, Amelia Monk, very proud.

“We are fortunate to have many girls who are currently playing club with the Noosa Tigers or Pomona.

“We also have some Year 7s who have never played before, however, our Year 9 girls have been supporting them.

“The girls have protected each other on the field and some of our senior players have stood up when we needed them, too.”

She said she had been impressed with a number of her players this season.

“Across the park, I believe we are a strong outfit, with two of our players, twin sisters Raffiel and Remi Baviello, just returning to our team back from U15 Queensland Aussie rules duties,” she said.

“I have been impressed with Maya Bovalino, our captain, who is so smart with the footy and uses it so well when she gets it.

“Lily Cooke, in our forward line, has been excellent and I can’t go past Ayla Aidrie, who had a fantastic regional final, albeit after breaking her thumb in the first game and continuing to play through for the remainder of the day.

“In our midfield, a Year 8 student Indi Kendall, who is new to Aussie rules, has been fantastic and I feel like I could list all 22 players, they have impressed us each game we have played.”
