REPORTS
Villanova College 40 lost to Nudgee College 63 (Senior Male, Oval 1)
This was an impressive opening 15 minutes.
It was a very physical and tough battle, with neither side willing to let the other gain any momentum.
Nudgee were definitely tested on their defensive resolve and proved a tough nut to crack.
The second term was pretty much the same with neither side able to create a comfortable lead.
Villa did get the better of the period and took a five-point advantage into the halftime break at 24-19.
Nudgee then exposed Villa on the outside and flipped the switch, imposing themselves and using their size to their advantage, bullying Villa off the ball through the middle.
The boys from Nudgee scored 25-points in the quarter, taking a 13-point lead into the final 15 minutes.
Nudgee again proved too much for Villa once they got on a roll.
The white and blue juggernauts smothered nearly all of Villa’s attacking effort and put the yellow V to the sword, piling on the points and cementing their spot in the semis.
Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar 59 d Lourdes Hill College 28 (Senior Female, Oval 2)
From the first whistle, Lindisfarne were the dominant force.
Lindisfarne slotted two six pointers and kicked two minors to take an early 14-point lead in the opening five minutes of the game.
They then kicked three more to blow Lourdes out of the water and lead 32-2.
In the second, Lourdes Hill mounted a strong comeback, keeping their opponents scoreless and managed to kick two goals of their own, bringing the deficit back to 17 points.
It was just one goal in the third term - and it went to Lindisfarne - as the margin jumped out to 24 points.
The final score probably flattered Lindisfarne a little, but in the end, their dominance in the first 15 minutes, with five goals, made it nearly impossible for Lourdes to overcome.
Helensvale SHS 24 lost to All Saints Anglican College 43 (Senior Male, Oval 1)
Another contest impacted by the elements, this time it wasn’t rain the teams were fighting but gale force winds.
With probably the first true drop punt of the game, All Saints scored a goal from the 50m mark to lead 7-0 early.
It was quickly backed up by an equally impressive goal from the white and green of Helensvale, but they couldn’t stem the flow of points, going into the first break down 20-7.
The game was played at an exceptional pace, with neither side willing to give an inch.
Helensvale were guilty of crucial skill errors that cost them a chance to regain momentum and get back into the game.
Despite going goalless in the quarter, the boys from All Saints went into the halftime break with a 21-15 lead.
The third was much the same with All Saints continuing to kick to their marks and execute their game plan to great effect.
Marymount College 52 d Pacific Pines SHS 22 (Junior Female, Oval 1)
Despite an incredible start and a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, Pacific Pines succumbed to the sheer weight of pressure by Marymount for the rest of the game.
Marymount came booming out of the gates in the second term, scoring two goals in the first three minutes to close to within two points of their opponents.
They continued their dominant run, scoring their third and fourth goals of the quarter, to take a 25-14 lead.
The third quarter was a much more docile affair, with a number of behinds.
But, after relentless pressure inside Pacific Pines’ 50m, Marymount scored two more maximums, blowing out the lead to 39-16 at the end of the quarter.
The final term was much like the second, in which Marymount were both relentless and clinical to book their spot in the semis.
Loreto College 40 d Mountain Creek SHS 24 (Junior Female, Oval 2)
With the skies clear but overcast and slippery conditions still affecting play, both Loreto and Mountain Creek struggled to get a good handle on the ball, with Loreto the only side to score in the first quarter.
The start of the second quarter started with a Loreto goal - and a cracker it was from a tight angle. They then extended their lead with another goal after a bit of confusion about whether the ball was touched.
With Mountain Creek still to trouble the scoreboard, Loretto kicked a bouncing ground ball for another major right on the halftime buzzer to lead 21-0.
The points avalanche didn’t stop after the break either as another goal extended their lead to 27 points.
It took 35 minutes, but the girls in red from Mountain Creek finally got on the board with a nice break away to reduce the margin to 27-6.
They closed the gap to 10 points with 13 minutes left in the game - and an upset looked possible.
Then out of nowhere the margin closed to four.
But the comeback was shortlived and Loreto regrouped to kick two late goals and take the win.
Iona College 45 d BSSSC 43 (Junior Male, Oval 1)
Iona got off to a cracking start, kicking the first two goals of the game, before BSSSC fought back to level the scores at 13-13.
A very wet and slippery outfield resulted in a bit of loose play early but both sides did their best to adapt.
Iona scored another goal on the quarter-time buzzer, going into the break up 19-13.
The second quarter was all Iona and they finished out the half with a healthy 12-point lead.
BSSSC fought back and took the lead - 35-33 - The final term started out as another very scrappy ground game, but Iona regained the lead at 39-35.
They seemed to have sealed the game when a goal from distance took them out to an eight-point advantage.
But when BSSSC kicked a goal with 52 seconds left, the game was in for a thrilling finale.
BSSSC had their chance to win it but they dropped a mark stone cold and a relieved iona came away with the win.
