Day two of the StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools, North Queensland Championships on Wednesday was jam-packed full of action, with 16 games, including four grand finals, played across junior and senior divisions.

It followed on the success of Tuesday’s primary-aged competition, where four of the top schools in the region played off in eight games.

The Cathedral College have claimed a gripping one-point victory over Ryan Catholic College in the senior female grand final en route to the title.

Cathedral clung on for a 3.4 (22) to 3.3 (21) triumph, the siren sounding as Ryan finally broke through to their forward 50, in turn quelling hopes of a last-minute winner.

TCC trailed 16-21 heading into the final quarter, a 50-metre penalty awarded to Miah Powell for overstepping the mark proved decisive, allowing her to regain the lead for her school.

Powell would finish with two goals, both off the back of 50s.

Jess Large also starred for Cathedral, zigzagging her way through the Ryan defence for the game’s first goal. She was scintillatingly quick, slicing her through past helpless Ryan opponents time and time again and gaining metres with her penetrating boot.

Ryan’s best goal was their third, a brilliant team effort that saw them take it end-to-end from the kick-in before a pinpoint centring ball allowed Chloe Craven to convert.

Neive Ryan was one of Ryan Catholic’s best off half-back and through the middle, her composure under pressure was second to none and she had some vital possessions.

Earlier in the day, St Andrew’s Catholic College downed Emmaus College 22-11 to claim the junior female title.

St Augustine’s College cruised to victory over Chanel College to claim the senior male title.

Saints looked the better team from start to finish in the 54-point blitz, running away 77-23 victors.

Their structure behind the ball set them apart as they were able to lock it in their forward half for extended periods and force repeat entries.

The pressure would become too much for Chanel’s defence to withstand.

Harry Cook was the clear standout from the destructive St Augustine’s showing, with the midfield bull racking up a plethora of touches through the middle.

His dominance didn’t end there, his thumping right boot picking out targets aplenty in the forward 50 and gaining an abundance of metres.

Ash Moore was a livewire for St Augustine’s in the forward 50, posing a threat at ground level as well as aerially and getting on the end of a number of goals.

Patrick Maher also showed glimpses of his talent in the forward half, clunking some big marks.

Down back, Justin Langham had a strong game as an interceptor for St Augustine’s.

There were moments where Chanel threatened to mount a late resurgence, but it wasn’t to be, finding the post twice late including on a long-range effort from outside 50.

The win means both St Augustine’s outfits will be heading to the state titles in Maroochydore, after its junior male side claimed a thrilling one-point grand final victory over St Brendan’s earlier in the day.

PREVIEW

Ryan Catholic College’s Vanessa Brage believes her school’s senior girls side will be one to watch.

“We’ve had some really strong players in the junior side and they’re all now in the opens, which is huge, they’re a really solid team,” Brage said.

“We’ve got a lot of girls who are 16-17 playing in women’s competitions, and the Suns Academy, and they make NQ sides, it’s great.”

Ryan Catholic College’s Senior Female side will be one to watch.

St Augustine’s College of Cairns (Junior Male, Senior Male) and St Patrick’s College of Mackay (Junior Female, Senior Female) were able to qualify two sides.

Moranbah State High will be the only school with three sides competing after their senior female side was afforded a reprieve despite finishing second in Mackay, as the result of another school pulling out.

Moranbah senior male coach Jason McKane believes Blake Thompson will be a key player in his side.

“He’s a crafty little midfielder, clean hands, played Suns representatives for a few years now, pretty talented footballer,” McKane said.

Moranbah’s senior female and junior male sides will also feature the siblings of Suns AFLW player Kaylee Kimber - Jen and Cody.

Both will be standout players in their respective sides, according to McKane.

Cody will be in action against St Brendan’s College from 8am, while you can catch Jen take on Ryan Catholic College at 10:30am.
