PREVIEW
On the boys side of the primary competition, Holy Cross School will play Ryan Catholic College and Mackay West Primary School will face St John the Baptist Catholic Primary for spots in the grand final.
Over with the girls, Whitfield State School will take on Ryan Catholic and Mackay West Primary will play Farnborough State School, with the winners progressing to the decider.
Only two schools - Ryan Catholic and Mackay West - managed to qualify both their male and female teams.
Townsville’s Ryan Catholic will be a school to watch, having recently claimed the mixed Garbutt Magpies Cup, as well as their respective local titles required to progress to this stage of the competition.
The primary girls progressed to the state titles last year, where they finished fourth.
Girls co-coach Vanessa Brage was thrilled with the Garbutt Magpies Cup performance.
“It was good, the kids played well together and it’s a mixed comp so they worked the ball well together,” Brage said.
“The girls really shone, and the weather was terrible, but they played in the conditions really well, it was great.”
Several players caught Brage’s eye from both a boys and girls perspective.
“Ashton Catalano, he’s fantastic, quick little athlete. We’ve got Oscar Fielde, who made the NQ rep side for us, which was really good,” she said.
“We’ve got such a diverse range of girls on the team. Frankie Davis, one of our forwards, she’s a nice solid player for us.
“Through the middle, we’ve just got some quick guns. A girl named Finella Keir, who’s quite quick, and Reese Achilles.”
Victory over Whitfield State in the 10am game would see the Ryan Catholic girls move one step closer to repeating last year’s heroics.
