SuperCoach AFL mid-season draft rookie prices revealed

SuperCoach players have 13 new players to choose from today after Monday’s mid-season draft — and most of them are available for a bargain price. See all their prices and positions.

AFL Mid-season draft 2019 wrap

Former Fremantle defender Cameron Sutcliffe will re-enter SuperCoach as the most expensive of the 13 players chosen during the mid-season draft.

Sutcliffe, who played 104 games for the Dockers before being delisted at the end of last year, has averaged 65 or better in three of his seven AFL seasons.

The 27-year-old has been given a price tag of $199,500, the equivalent of being taken as an early first-round selection in the AFL National Draft.

Another ex-Docker, No. 1 mid-season pick Josh DeLuca, has been listed at $154,700 after being taken by Carlton, while former Port Adelaide midfielder Will Snelling will be $117,300 after joining Essendon.

The remaining 10 players chosen will be available for $102,400.

JOSH DELUCA, $154,700, MID

Previous SuperCoach average: 47.5 (four games in 2017)

DeLuca was the first selection in the mid-season draft, getting his second AFL chance with Carlton after previously playing four games for Fremantle. The 179cm midfielder has since dominated in the WAFL for Subiaco, averaging 27.9 disposals, 3.3 marks and 6.8 tackles a game last season. He should get a chance to prove himself in a struggling Carlton team, but it’s always harder to make a case for selecting a higher-priced rookie.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “We are invested in developing Josh into an AFL footballer through our system. That ultimately will take some time over the coming month, before he progresses through the Northern Blues in the VFL and ultimately pushes for AFL selection.” — list manager Michael Agresta

MITCH RIORDAN, $102,400, MID

After battling several injury setbacks which ultimately cost him during his draft year, Dandenong Stingray Riordan has earned an opportunity at the top level the hard way. He has averaged 112 ranking points per game in the NAB League this year, with a season-high of

144 against Tasmania when he had 23 possessions and laid five tackles. He might be more of a project player and is unlikely to figure prominently in SuperCoach plans.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “With the opportunity to add to our group during the season, we wanted to ensure we took a long-term approach to help improve our list.” — football operations manager Jon Haines.

KYLE DUNKLEY, $102,400, MID

Dunkley might be the pick of the SuperCoach options from the mid-season draft. Much like his older brother Josh, the son of former Sydney defender Andrew is a tough tackling midfielder-forward who has four scores of 110 or better in four NAB League games this year. He also kicked three goals on the MCG on his VFL debut for Footscray against Box Hill. Melbourne’s extensive injury list could mean an early AFL debut isn’t far away.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “I think he’s capable given what he’s shown in the VFL. We see him starting forward and then building into a midfielder in time with his body size.” — recruiting manager Jason Taylor

MICHAEL KNOLL, $102,400, RUC

If you’re already set with Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn, then you shouldn’t need to consider Knoll. The only reason he would be in your trade plans is if you are trading Adelaide’s Reilly O’Brien to a rookie this week. There’s a possibility he’s introduced as a ruck partner to Callum Sinclair after impressing with South Adelaide but at 205cm he’s more likely to be a long-term prospect for the Swans. Knoll has averaged 104 ranking points from seven SANFL games this season.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “Ever since he got an opportunity to play at South Adelaide he’s developed really well, and we hope that development can continue at the Swans.” — recruiting manager Simon Dalrymple

LACHLAN HOSIE, $102,400, FWD

The leading goalkicker in the SANFL this year, North Melbourne has already flagged medium forward Hosie as a project player for its forward line. Interim coach Rhys Shaw is likely to give opportunities to players to prove themselves in the second half of the campaign, but Hosie is expected to bide his time in the VFL when he crosses to Arden St. He might be one for next year.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “Lachie has been on the radar for some time, but we feel his improvement this year has been significant,” — national recruiting manager Mark Finnigan.

RYAN GARDNER, $102,400, FWD

Former Cat Gardner is one of the most likely ready-made player from the mid-season draft after spending three years playing VFL with Geelong and the first half of the current campaign with Footscray. His ranking points have fluctuated between 24 and 125 in six VFL games this season, a trend not uncommon with talls. He could be worth consideration for bench cover if he plays, but don’t expect big points every week.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “There’s no pressure on him to be ready right now, but he was in the system for three years at Geelong and has been in our VFL system, so he’s physically ready to play at the right time.” — list and recruiting manager Sam Power.

WILL SNELLING, $117,300, MID

Previous SuperCoach average: 64 (one game in 2016)

Former Port Adelaide on-baller Will Snelling has been a prolific SANFL player since being delisted by the Power and earned a second AFL crack with an average of 30.4 disposals and 137 ranking points this season for West Adelaide. Snelling is also averaging 10 tackles a game and has been flagged as a Devon Smith replacement by the Bombers. He’ll be too good to pass up if his opportunity comes soon.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “Losing Devon Smith for the year has left a hole in the team, particularly in midfield. We think his (Snelling) form stacks up. If he comes over and plays in the top form he’s been in this season, he’ll add some depth to our midfield immediately.” — list manager Adrian Dodoro

JACK MAYO, $102,400, FWD

A developing forward, Mayo has played four games in the WAFL reserves this year, so don’t expect him to make an immediate impact with the Saints. In two senior matches for Subiaco this season he has averaged 54 ranking points and kicked one goal. He doesn’t appear likely to be a downgrade target.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “We think he’ll really complement what we have already at the club and at only 19, still has a lot of improvement in his game.” — list manager James Gallagher.

CAMERON SUTCLIFFE, $199,500, DEF

Sutcliffe has a proven SuperCoach record with four seasons with an average of 60 or better, but it’s hard to recommend him at almost $200,000. With an average of 60, he wouldn’t make much money from his starting price.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “He has done everything the club has asked of him since coming to our club via our SANFL list. The fact that he is aware of the way we want to play will make his transition onto our AFL list easier.” — list manager Jason Cripps

DILLON O’REILLY, $102,400, DEF-FWD

O’Reilly replaces Matt Taberner on Fremantle’s list and although that means one opening in the Fremantle forward line, Ross Lyon is hardly pressed for options. All indications are O’Reilly will be a player the Dockers put time into for the next 18 months to see if he can be a future goalkicker for the club.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “When he plays WAFL, a part of the arrangement is that he can play for Peel so he can develop with the AFL-listed players in our system, understand the game style, how the game is played and what the Freo way is.” — list manager Mark Micallef

MARLION PICKETT, $102,400, MID

Out until late in the season with a finger injury, Pickett could be the player SuperCoaches use as a late-season downgrade to free up cash for the last premium upgrade. The 27-year-old is a ready-made player and if he’s injected into Richmond’s team before finals as an X-factor, he’ll be worth considering should you still have trades spare.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “Being a long-term selection, we think it’s an opportunity to get Marlion in now … and an injury like this will set him back a little bit from training, but we think long-term it will be good for us.” — recruiting manager Matt Clark

JOHN NOBLE, $102,400, MID

The Magpies were thrilled to secure a player with Noble’s skill set, but with Nathan Buckley’s team in premiership contention and spots in the senior team hard to come by, he’s likely to spend the rest of the year in the VFL. Monitor his progress, but he’s likely a prospect for our 2020 teams.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “We’re really pleased. He’s got a real speed-endurance combination, which is going to put pressure on our list in a whole range of areas.” — recruiting manager Derek Hine

CODY HIRST, $102,400, MID

Sydney has shown a willingness to blood young players this year and has earmarked Hirst for a role as a small forward or on a wing. The Swans have plenty of wingmen on their list and if Hirst was to play as a small forward it would limit his SuperCoach scoring potential. Dunkley and Snelling appear better options as midfield downgrades.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “Cody’s running is at a really good level and so is his agility. We think that as a small forward or on the wing he’s got some really good qualities.” — recruiting manager Simon Dalrymple
