Police claim repeat offender led officers on high speed chase

A day after being bailed on dangerous driving charges, a man allegedly led police cars and a helicopter on a chase that reached nearly twice the speed limit — and was later charged with fracturing the skull of his ex-partner’s father with a pole.

A young Logan man led police units and a helicopter on a wild chase through the suburbs of Logan last Friday night, a day after he was bailed on almost identical charges, a court has heard.

After Friday’s arrest of Trent Gregory Kitchin, 21, police also charged him with grievous bodily harm after they claim he fractured the skull of an ex-partner’s father with a pole-like object last year in an unrelated incident.

Police allege officers were on patrol in Woodridge about 9pm last Friday when they noticed a vehicle with false number plates.

This resulted in the officers attempting to engage Mr Kitchin, with him taking off “at speed” down Blaxland St, Woodridge, before making his way on to Kingston Rd, travelling south.

By this time a Polair helicopter had joined the chase and witnessed Mr Kitchin allegedly travelling past Slacks Creek towards Kingston travelling at speeds of up to 120km/h in a 70km/h zone.

Police claimed Mr Kitchin went through a pair of red-light intersections where there was “traffic banked up on all sides”, including at the intersection of Kingston and Monash roads at Loganlea.

It is alleged he then made his way on to Chambers Flat Rd via Muchow Rd, Waterford West.

It was around here that police released a stinger to stop the car and Mr Kitchin decamped the vehicle.

Police say he was discovered in the shower of a nearby residence changing his clothes.

He was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and driving while disqualified by a court order (repeat offender).

Police allege on April 30 last year at a Greenbank address, Mr Kitchin struck his ex-girlfriend’s father in the head from behind with a “pole-like object”, causing a deep 5cm laceration and skull fracture.

Three people transported the victim to Logan Hospital after Mr Kitchin allegedly ran away.

The court heard Mr Kitchin failed to appear in court four times in 2018 and was also convicted of assault occasioning bodily harm that same year.

He was on parole for this offence when the grievous bodily harm is alleged to have occurred.

He also has outstanding charges which include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Mr Kitchin received bail on these charges the day before he is alleged to have committed the current offending.

He was refused bail and will have his charges mentioned again on September 2.
