INDOOROOPILLY STATE HIGH SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DUXES – SARAH COSTANZO & MATTHEW HAIGH

SARAH: I really enjoy Chemistry and English as I have had some really good teachers that have supported me and made these subjects really enjoyable. Although I thought that I had a chance at becoming dux, I knew that there were lots of other people who had worked really hard as well. When they called out my name, I was really surprised. This achievement means a lot to me, as it shows that my hard work and long nights have paid off, but it is also a nice way to finish high school and remember my last few weeks here. Next year, I am planning to study engineering at university next year, but I also want to travel.

MATTHEW: My favourite subject is Mathematics but I also really enjoy Physics. Becoming dux meant that my two years of doing IB had a happy ending. It showed me that my hard work paid off and was a nice way to end high school because when I started high school, I was perhaps the furthest away from dux as a student can be. I am really happy with the outcome of the award. It is the award that I am the most proud of and I am also very glad that it was shared between me and Sarah as I feel that it best reflects the performance and dedication that we both have. I am really proud of us both and I couldn’t be happier with the result. I would like to do mathematics and computer science at university next year.

INDOOROOPILLY STATE HIGH SCHOOL QCAA DUXES – ESZTER BENEDEK & LIAM HUNTER

ESZTER: I came to Indooroopilly State High School from Hungary only last year, and I’m still not completely familiar with the Australian school system yet. I did not know what the dux award was until a week before the school’s academic awards night. Receiving the dux award reassures me that I can achieve anything in life if I work hard and never give up. Changing school systems, getting introduced to the Australian culture, and overcoming the language barrier were some of the challenges that I faced, so the fact that I still managed to become the highest achieving student of the school fills me with even more ambition and motivation for the coming years. I’m hoping to receive an offer for The University of Melbourne’s Actuarial Studies program. In the meantime, I’m seriously thinking about taking a gap year, so that I could widen my study options by applying to some European universities as well.

LIAM: My favourite subject was definitely Visual Art. It wasn’t always something I really enjoyed, but when I came to this school, I found out I enjoyed it and understood it more than I had assumed. I didn’t think I had any skill but I hadn’t made the understanding that skill in art can be applied in many different ways – it’s more complex than I had assumed. Digital art for me was a really nice way to approach it because it was less reliant on the hand and more on the mind. I didn’t think I’d become Dux. It’s really special. It’s a nice feeling for my hard work to pay off. It feels like a reward that invalidates my insecurities. Next year, I’m applying for a Bachelor of Journalism and Arts at a couple of different universities, hoping to focus on art history and the media, and to some for creating art.

JOHN PAUL COLLEGE Dux 2019: MINUKA MENDIS
JOHN PAUL COLLEGE Dux 2019: MINUKA MENDIS

JOHN PAUL COLLEGE — MINUKA MENDIS

OVERCOMING stress at exam time was one of the hurdles for John Paul College Dux for 2019, Minuka Mendis in her pursuit of an OP1.

As many students understand, the dazzling academic put a lot of pressure on herself to do her absolute best but she also realised it was not always impossible to be perfect.

“There are times that you will fail to reach your short-term goals but that does not mean you should give up on your long-term goals,” she said.

Time management was also a major obstacle for the Year 12 student who was part of concert choir, chamber orchestra, Sinfonia Strings, basketball team, netball team and debating team.

She also held the position of Senior School Vice Captain.

“There were many late nights and after school tutorials but with a lot of courage and persistence, I was able to keep pushing till the end,” she said.

“After going through this year, I am more aware of my limits and know that it is important to take a break sometimes.”

She said there were no words to describe how thankful she was to all her teachers and said they were always prepared to answer endless questions and to stay back for after school tutorials.

“Before nearly every exam, they would happily agree to personally meet up with me to answer my last-minute queries. Throughout the year, there were times where I couldn’t reach my goals and they were always there to help me find a way to reach my aspirations.

“I have to give special mention to my Head of Year, Dawn Boland, for her endless support. If I ever was stressed or overwhelmed, her office door was wide open.”

Next year, Minuka hopes to study a double degree in architecture and engineering at the Queensland University of Technology.

She hopes to one day start her own engineering firm and make a difference in the world by designing new and innovative buildings that take advantage of the environment.

MORETON BAY BOYS’ COLLEGE – JAMES DE RAAT

For me to earn Dux of the College meant a significant amount since it symbolised the amount of time and patience I have put into my work. While I didn’t necessarily achieve the typical GPA of a Dux student, I still felt honoured to receive the award and it meant everything to me to see everyone stand up and applaud me. My favourite subjects at school were engineering and IT. My plan for the future is to attend university in 2020 – almost guaranteed to be at QUT or UQ. I intend on studying engineering with the possibility of doing a double degree in engineering and IT.

MORETON BAY COLLEGE – SARAH LUCKENSMEYER

Earning Dux of the School was always the ultimate dream coming into high school at Moreton Bay College. However for me, it always seemed just out of reach, being in a competitive and hard working cohort of intelligent girls. To be honest, receiving this award had remained a dream for me, rather than a real possibility, however achieving Head of Year 11 last year began to sow the seed that maybe I could do this. The standing ovation I received from the crowd had me in tears again, and I will never forget that feeling of pure elation. I would probably say that my favourite subject is Mathematics C, closely followed by English and Chemistry. In the future, my end goal is to become a paediatric surgeon, working to better the lives of babies and children, in particular within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I have always had a passion for working with children, and I would like a job which is challenging and at the same time is able to help others.

MT ST MICHAEL’S COLLEGE – APRIL FOXLEE & CAITLIN TURNER

APRIL: I would say that my best subject is English which I happen to really enjoy as well. I’ve also always loved Physical Education. To be College Dux means so much to me as it is a testament to the hard work that I have put in over the last five years. It was incredibly exciting news and I’m so happy to be able to share such an honour with Caitlin. In the near future I am hoping to study physiotherapy at university and plan to continue being involved in sport.

CAITLIN: My best and favourite subjects are Visual Art and Information Technology Systems. I have always loved art and found this passion when I was quite young. However, I found my skills in IT at school. After trying the subject for the first time in Year 8, I found that I had skills in using programs to create products digitally. I discovered that I could transfer my artistic skills into the digital world and I loved that flexibility. To me, being College Dux allows me to show the younger students that you can achieve great things through hard work. I want to show that you don’t have to be studying only Maths and Science subjects to achieve a great result (an idea that many students have). If you follow your passions and choose to do things that you enjoy, you can achieve incredible results.

I plan to go to University to study a Dual Degree in Business and Design (Visual Communication) in the hopes of becoming a Graphic Designer. This career combines my love for art and skills in IT. I also hope to start an Illustration Business in the future.

ST LAURENCE’S COLLEGE – LAWRENCE LAGOS

Being awarded College Dux is easily the proudest moment of life. It took a lot of discipline and sacrifices to be in the running for the award. I must admit that it was quite an indescribable and special feeling when they announced my name; it was a relief because it meant all my hard-work over the years had finally paid off. I love applying maths and science to the world around me- it explains how everything works. I want to use the skills that I have learnt in High School and apply them to Optometry. I’ve always wanted to use the Health field as a stepping stone to business. I love science, but also would like to be entrepreneurial. I’m not particularly fond of doing the same thing forever, but would like to get my hands in a couple of things. So, my plan is to professionalise in the Health industry and then explore investment options, whether that be property development or building multiple practices.
