Top high schools dux winners for 2019: Moreton Bay

We asked schools across Moreton Bay region to share the stories of their award-winning students of 2019. Join us in celebrating the success of some of our best and brightest young people.

HIGH schools across Moreton Bay acknowledged the achievements of Year 12 students last week.

From maths, science and engineering to English, creative and performing arts, the exceptional talents of these young adults will put them in good stead for the future.

GENESIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE – SOPHIE KINGSFORD

Sophie Kingsford received four first in subject awards, the MBRC Excellence in Engineering Award, the UQ Young Scholars award and a QUT STEM Research Internship.

She also attended both the National Youth Science Forum and the London International Youth Science Forum.

THE LAKES COLLEGE – BENJAMIN QUICK

After undergoing extensive and varied testing as part of the College Gifted and Talented Program, Benjamin was twice accelerated at the Lakes College, the first time in early Primary and the second time in Year 7. At the age of 15, Benjamin is the youngest Year 12 student to graduate from The Lakes College. Benjamin has also received subject prizes in Biology, Maths B, Maths C and the Magna Cum Laude Award which is awarded to Year 12 students who have received a subject prize and/or an Academic Excellence Award at every Awards night since commencing their Secondary Schooling in Year 7. Benjamin is an avid sailor and is a member of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. He has also participated in various college musicals, bands and has represented the College in soccer for a number of years. He was also awarded the Chinese Excellence Award (for the second year).

NORTH LAKES STATE COLLEGE – EMILY COLLINS

Emily Collins excelled in English, maths B, physics, chemistry, biology and modern history.

BRAY PARK STATE HIGH SCHOOL – JOSEPH CHURCHILL

Joseph Churchill studied English, mathematics B, mathematics C, physics, chemistry and French.

Joseph plans to study engineering and science at university.

PINE RIVERS STATE HIGH SCHOOL – PARIS SOLMAN

Paris Solman was top in English, physics, chemistry, maths C and engineering technology.

She attended the National Youth Science Forum, placed 3rd in the world in her team for 4x4 in Schools and is the school’s nominee for the TJ Ryan memorial medal scholarship.

BRIBIE ISLAND STATE HIGH SCHOOL – KEIFFER TITMUS

Best/Favourite Subjects:

VHA in all 6 subjects (English, maths B, maths C, chemistry, physics, biology), subject awards for physics, maths B and English.

Plans for the future:

Master degree in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Queensland. Help develop the next generation of computer technology.

AUSTRALIAN CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CABOOLTURE – KIMBERLY PARRY

Kimberly’s favourite subject was chemistry.

Kimberly wants to go to university then become a research scientist in pathology or something similar.

After school she loved running (sprints) and reading.

TULLAWONG STATE HIGH SCHOOL – JADE SHORTER

“My favourite subject at school was English because I could release my creativity through words. My teacher was amazing and helped so much with cutting down my assignments when I went over the word limit,” she said.

“My plan for the future is to go to university to study a double bachelor degree in law and justice. From there, I want to go on to study the graduate diploma in law and hopefully become a criminal prosecutor later on.

“I was involved in my schools dance extension program, completing the certificate three in dance at the same time. It was an incredible experience as it allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and gain knowledge of how to work in a professional environment.

“The best advice I can give anyone is to take deep breaths, often and always. They keep you centred and allow you to take a moment to refocus on the present. Breathe when you feel overwhelmed and you’ll find that eventually, the minor issues will melt away.”

Best/favourite subjects:

Favourite subject was legal studies but my best subjects were legal Studies and biology

Plans for the future:

I plan to go to university next year and study either a bachelor of law and business or go into medicine

Extra curricular activities:

A part-time job, athletics - at regionals, fundraiser co-ordinator, cross country running

Extra:

As part of my year 12 I studied at QUT under the StartQUT program with a GPA of 7.0. The ACC Moreton Distance Education program gave me the flexibility to do both school and StartQUT.
