An Ipswich man employed at a well-known Brisbane hospital has been sentenced for his bizarre stash of Japanese ‘hentai’ comic books featuring child pornography, which he used to pleasure himself.

Springfield Lakes man Kennith John Jorgensen, 34, also used a peer-to-peer torrenting service to download and share a small quantity of videos depicting child exploitation material (CEM), Brisbane District Court heard on Tuesday.

Jorgensen, who the court heard has been a wardsman at Greenslopes Private Hospital since 2016, pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing CEM and one count each of using a carriage service to access and using a carriage service to make available CEM.

The offences of using a carriage service to access and make available CEM occurred at an address in MacGregor on October 25, 2019.

The court heard he downloaded and made available seven videos, three of which could be recovered and played by police.

Two videos featured pubescent girls while the third depicted a child with an adult male.

A search warrant was subsequently executed on February 16 last year at the Springfield Lakes home Jorgensen shares with his fiance.

There, police discovered two Japanese ‘hentai’ (i.e. pornographical) comic books depicting schoolgirls engaged in sexual acts.

Despite initial prevarication, Jorgensen subsequently admitted to using the comic books, which he purchased in Japan in late 2018, to pleasure himself, stating his preferred age range for girls was 12 – 16.

His computer also contained 146 hentai images featuring animated children in a variety of sexual acts.

Under Queensland legislation, depictions of CEM, even if they are animated or drawn, are still illegal.

Defence counsel Peter Baston told the court since Jorgensen was charged, he had attended 28 psychology sessions and had involved his family for support.

He said a conviction would likely affect Jorgensen’s employment at Greenslopes hospital and future opportunities in the healthcare industry.

Judge Suzanne Sheridan sentenced Jorgensen to two years’ probation; a two-year, $1000 good-behaviour bond; and fined him $2000.
