Ormiston have held off the reigning TAS First XV schoolboy rugby premiers with a gutsy 17-10 win at home.
It took a mighty team effort to withstand a charging St Columban’s side who were fighting from behind the whole game.
Ormiston No. 8 Daniel Body said: “I’m so proud of the boys. We played so gutsy today. So physical. We knew they were going to be a big team but we just played our hearts out.”
“I thought we stuck to our plan well. We had our structures. Lineouts were great today. The scrums too. We just didn’t give up. We knew they had a big front row but the boys dug deep and pushed through,” the towering No. 8 said after Ormistons thrilling victory.

Centre Laif Williams threw a superb cut-out ball to winger Dylan Penniket to score Ormiston’s first try, just how the winger got his team on the board in last week’s win over Canterbury.
On a muddy surface, the two teams went neck and neck for 45 minutes, advancing up and down the field in a gruelling game of footy. The stakes were high between a potential grand final match-up, with the supporters screaming, yellow cards being handed out and plenty of push-and-shove among the boys.
Columban’s prop Matt Siver and hooker Zak Streefkerk were phenomenal on defence. Fly half Ryan Fitzgerald looked dangerous with ball in hand, especially with his centre Myron Taupati- Campbell fired up next to him.
Columbian’s were aggressive to begin the second half, prop Oscar Torrens, lock Devlyn Nel and Taupati- Campbell harassing Ormiston on defence.
Williams exits and Ormistons patience at the breakdown saw winger Jack Johnston score a miraculous 60m runaway try against the run of play, to extend Ormistons lead at 17-0.
Columbans winger Peter McGrath made a massive tackle on Penniket scooting down the sideline to prevent Ormiston pushing further in front.
Williams made two try preventing tackles on his opposite number to uplift his team and hold out a rampaging Columbian’s side trying to pull off a miracle.
Columban’s finally broke the shackles, scoring through reserve Harry Wilson, who was put into space by Peter McGrath.
Columbans lock Sam Hoolihan ran 30 metres to make a break, followed by a strong Nel carry before the ball was spread wide through the hands to see Taupati- Campbell barge over for Columbans second try in minutes. Ormiston managed to hold off an on the run Columban’s outfit to win the game 17-10 in an epic showdown.
Ormiston assistant coach Kris Peterman said, “The boys just know the game plan. And they do it religiously … today we just kept tackling and waiting for the moment. We repelled them. We defended like we didn’t want to lose on our home pitch. Our defence was outstanding. Just guys slowing their breakdown down, allowing our guys to get set in the line again.”

“Laif Williams was a stand out. He knows when to plug corners. He knows when we have had enough of the ball and should play it in their half. He was outstanding with lots of cover tackles today. Our hooker Luca De Abreu was really solid and Riley O’Brien was in the breakdowns, he counterrucked, he ran our lineouts so we were really impressed with him,” Peterman said.
WestMAC v St Paul’s
After a very even first half where both teams went to the break at 12-all, St Pauls hit their strap scoring six unanswered tries to win 48-12 in a convincing performance. Pumas best in their round three win were Logan Stansfield, Nathan Westaway and Harrison Carter.
JPC v CHAC
John Paul College maintained its challenge for the TAS (The Associated Schools) premiership by defeating Cannon Hill Anglican College 60-12 after leading 36-7 at halftime.
Imposing No. 8-inside centre Beni Allen shone alongside his hooker Noah Coleman and lock Joseph Nkandira Brock on debut.
Allen was an attacking powerhouse, strong in contact and his vision was obvious, while Coleman was great in the hard churn of the middle forward play.
Allen also scored two tries, while fly half Lachie Georgiades kicked five conversions.
With prop Oscar Neuendorf-King leading the way, CHAC were better in the second half, holding ball for long periods and recycling to challenge the JPC defence.
They scored just on halftime and again in the second half when Connor Paddick crossed, but JPC were too good.
After a bone jarring tackle, inside centre Jamie Critchley also scored with some nice hole running, while prop Declan Arkadieff also crossed after his fullback Alex Georgiades had stripped possession from CHAC and sprinted up field.
There was also a nice moment for centre Mark Moran who scored in his return from injury.
