TAS First XV rugby round 2 results

A mighty match has unfolded among the games in today’s round 2 action of TAS First XV schoolboy rugby, but which teams came out on top? SEE OUR MATCH REPORTS.

Andrew Dawson reports from Cannon Hill that a mighty match unfolded between CHAC and WestMAC, with the home side getting the win – but only just.

What a difference a week makes as WestMAC mounted an extraordinary recovery from a heavy first round defeat to go down by 12-10.

And when full-time was called, WestMAC were on attack, pushing for victory.

ultimately defence won it for CHAC, with the Cannon Hill boys putting their bodies on the line to stop their bigger rivals from crossing.

Fullback Lachlan Phillips, Alex Coldman-Fussell, Toby Butler, Kyran Taylor and co kept turning up, going low and bringing down their inspired rivals.

CHAC led 7-nil and 12-5 before Thomas Mitchie crossed for WestMAC, setting the scene for a dramatic finish.

Michael Gall and Phillips had made tackles to repel CHAC, but Mitchie then attacked a wide blindside, plunging over to score.

WestMAC, showing much better ball control, were unrecognisable from their round 1 effort, with No. 8 and captain Matt Hayes, prop Liam Theron, Tom Dove and Michael Lindsay driving their side forward.

Earlier, in the first half, Coldman-Fussell made a long run which gave CHAC field position for No. 8 Alex Gough to attack. Lachlan Phillips then kicked the conversion.

But WestMAC came back, and after a covering tackle by CHAC centre Butler, WestMAC kept working the wide blind for paceman Hamish Hunt to score a deserved try.

Gall then swept onto a loose pass to score an intercept try for CHAC, leading to a 12-5 advantage.

But then came Mitchie’s try for WestMAC, setting the scene for an exciting finish.

CHAC half Johnny Dick also had a nice match for the winners behind a pack which challenged hard against a big WestMAC SIDE.

CHAC 12 (M Gall, A Gough tries; L Philips conv) def WestMAC 10 (T Butler, T Mitchie tries).

Nick Tucker reports, Canterbury flanker Alex Mutimuti and Ormiston winger Dylan Penniket traded five-pointers to begin a fantastic 70 minutes of end-to-end footy.

Ormiston pounced next with a switch play from the scrum, No. 8 Daniel Body finding scrumhalf Lucas Wood who fed fly half Hugo Hobbs a great pass to score.

Ormiston Hooker Luca De Abreu and Hobbs connected to find Penniket probing on the wing to score his second try against the run of play to make it 21-8.

Pennicket got his hat-trick in the beginning of the second-forty with a scintillating 60m solo try which got the Ormiston fans on their feet. The home side leading 28-8.

Ormiston assistant coach Kris Peterman said: “We started slow. We couldn’t get our hands on the ball initially but once we got into our game and started to play our style, our patterning worked really well and then some opportunities came off the back of that.

“Our right winger Jack Johnston was outstanding today and our left winger Dylan Penniket scored a hat-trick as well.

“In the forwards I thought lock Angus Melville was outstanding and Daniel Body our No. 8 always helps us go forward with his big strong carries.”

Mutimuti scored a cracking try down the left edge to make it 28-15, following excellent defensive pressure from his team inside Ormiston’s 22.

Ormiston hit back shortly after with slick through the hands play, shifting the ball from the halfback all the way to winger Jack Johnston, who made it 38-15.

Ormiston centre Cameron Douglas read the Canterbury offence like a book when scoring a 60m intercept try to extend the home teams lead at 45-15.

Canterbury’s best on the field, No. 8 Jack Henry perfected a lovely cross field kick to Liam Reynolds to give him his third try, and settle the scores at 45-20.

Henry had a faultless game, applying pressure across the paddock, defending his heart out, running the ball, and playmaking for his team.

Canterbury coach Josh Afu said “we couldn’t get out of second gear’’.

“We made a lot of mistakes and against a side like Ormiston they are very good at capitalising.

“They stuck to their structures and outworked us pretty much. We just didn’t work at the capacity we are able to work at.

“Liam Reynolds out the back is returning the ball really well for us at the moment and Jack Henry is an absolute rock at the lineout. We have to go back to the drawing board, get a few things right to make sure were working at the intensity that we need to compete.”

In the other match, St Pauls came out on top in a tight game against John Paul College.

It was an outstanding game between two even sides.

Both teams took their opportunity with JPC scoring with five minutes to go to take the lead. St Paul’s rallied from the kick off to build pressure which lead to a stunning Liam McGreggor try in the corner for a famous St. Paul’s Pumas victory.

St Paul’s Dan Johnstone lead from the front again with a big effort from stand in half back, to help earn his team a 36-33 win.

Both teams played an exceptional game of rugby, capping off an excellent round 2 of TAS First XV rugby.
