SEQ AFL under 17 girls footy finals - and then there were four after the weekend’s elemination finals.

And then there were four. The Burleigh Bombers, Tweed Coolangatta Blues, Surfers Paradise and Victoria Point will fight it out for the AFL SEQ under 17 girls grand final after a dramatic first weekend of finals.

A to Z CELEBRATION OF THE SEQ AFL UNDER 17 GIRLS SEASON

Could the play-off have been closer? Absolutely not as heavy hitters Burleigh and Surfers were almost bundled out, while Tweed Cooly had to work hard across four quarters to repell gutsy Sherwood.

RESULTS

Burleigh Bombers 4-11-35 defeated Wests Juniors 5-4-34

Surfers Paradise 7-64-8 defeated Broadbeach Cats 8-6-42

Tweed Coolangatta 3-6-24 defeated Sherwood Magpies 1-1-7

Victoria Point 60 defeated Maroochydore 1

This Sunday the Bombers play the Blues while the Sharks take on the Demons.

HOW IT ALL UNFOLDED

Tweed Coolangatta v Sherwood

In a rematch from just two weeks ago, Tweed generated more scoring shots and deservedly won but Sherwood were gallant and pushed and pushed across the match.

Tweed Cooly coach Dave Palmucci said the key to his side winning was having
lots of numbers around the ball, and tough and contested footy,’’ he said.

“Fortunately we were able to get the ball on the outside and hit the scoreboard, creating a bit of a lead and holding it for the majority of the game.

“It was a solid team effort today in all aspects, exactly what’s needed in finals footy.’’

Burleigh v Wests

The Bombers needed all their strike power, everyone of them, to prevent a roaring Wests Juniors from a major upset.

It came down to just one point and was anyone’s match.

One thing is for sure. Burleigh coach Em Otto will have her girls working on goal kicking after booting 11 behinds almost cost them.

Wests Juniors covered themselves in glory - despite the loss.

“It was a fantastic display of quality girls’ footy which went down to the wire,’’ said Wests coach Mark McCabe.

“Our girls showed real character to fight back and level the scores late in the fourth quarter only for Burleigh to push forward and score a match-winning point.’’

Best for Wests were Sammy Snowden, Nickkie Shaw (across half back), Charlotte Russell and Claudia Dargie in the midfield and Debir McCabe with three goals.

Bailey Cooke on the wing and Stevie Fisher in the ruck were also mighty.’’

Victoria Point v the Roos

Roos coach Aaron Yates said having two girls on the bench did not help his side, but praised Victoria Point who benefitted from the return of senior players.

“We fought well but couldn’t keep up,’’ said Yates, who praised Jemma Foley, Lily Thomas and Charlie Findlay.

Surfers Paradise v Broadbeach

Gosh the Cats were brave and nearly got the job done in a local derby classic.

“Our girls played well, but unfortunately we went down by a single shot despite a very strong effort across the field by all the players,’’ said coach James Dofter.

“The Broadbeach girls were devastated after having the winning goal taken off them.

“But I am so proud of the way the team acted, and came together as a team.

“All were outstanding.’’

And in Div 2 fooy, the MAGS were set for a local derby final against the Morningide Panthers after beating a full strenght Redcliffe under lights last weekend.

“We got the first centre clearance of the game and seemed to maintain dominance in this area for the remainder of the night,’’ said coach Damien King.

“Up forward Lilly Hendry and Jade Williams linked up consistently and a nice snap from Taya Weston was reward for effort.

“Sophie Hosack, Lilly Juffs and Isabella Strawbridge patrolled the backline helping our runners Jordyn Dornhart, Chloe Batrachenko and Madison Hague link up through the middle of the ground.’’

He said it was impossible to single out players, given the team performance.
