AFL SEQ’S UNDER 17 GIRLS 80 PLAYERS TO WATCH
Sandgate v Moreton Lions
The Hawks had another gritty win over a determined Lions, coach Shane Watterson reported.
Surfers v Sherwood
Surfers Paradise produced a four quarter performance to please their coach Chanel Fletcher.
Fletcher said she challenged her side each quarter to work on aspects and was delighted to see them completing their homework.
She also switched players around, trying different things, which the players brought into.
“It was a massive team effort.
“I like the flow, our run and carry of the ball. There were nice, quick link ups.’’
Sherwood coach Chris Bloor said Surfers Paradise were the best team in the competition.
“They are the benchmark. And today we had a good taste of what that benchmark is.’’
Victoria Point v Yeronga
The Devils were on song during their journey to the bayside, producing good, hard at the footy performances. “Our midfield was our engine room and our backline competed well, cutting off a lot of forward entry points from Victoria Point,’’ said coach Jessie Baltus.
Victoria Point coach Trevor Mayhew said it was a close game, with Yeronga getting away to a fast start. “Some positional changes got us back into the game late, but Yeronga’s efficiency up forward was the difference in the end in a tight, entertaining game.
Tweed Coolangatta v Wests Juniors
It was a rewarding away trip for the girls from the border club, with a win at Oakman Park.
Tweed Cooly coach Dave Palmucci said his side had a slow start due to Wests good structure and discipline.
“But the second quarter was more like us, winning the contested ball and getting hands on the footy and moving the footy with good shape,’’ Palmucci said.
“Injuries in the second quarter took us to only 15 girls so it took a huge effort by the girls to keep playing our footy.
“It was a good tight game played in a great spirit and we managed to kick a few late goals to take the win.’’
Wests Juniors coach Mark McCabe said his girls were beaten by a better side, but the lesson learned was the need to be better at stoppages “to get more reward for four forward 50 entries,’’ coach McCabe said.
Burleigh Bombers v Broadbeach
Burleigh had a hard fought win over rivals Broadbeach by around three goals, a win set up by the Bombers relentless work rate in the rain.
“It was heads over the footy all game and we out worked the Cats,’’ said a proud coach Emily Otto.
“This week we also had a bunch of under 15 players with us and it was great to see the next generation players coming up through the club.
Broadbeach coach James Dofter said his side played in honour of Kelly Hardy who had a big role in getting girls football started at the Cats.
“Unfortunately the day didn’t go to plan, with wet, contested football,’’ coach Dofter said.
He said the aim is for his side to play four quarters and that was still a work in progress.
Wilston Grange v Coorparoo
Wilston Grange coach James Sceney said his team’s win came in a match which was a hard slog in slippery and wet conditions against determined rivals.
“I felt like we dominated the first three quarters but couldn’t capitalise on the scoreboard, but luckily we were able to hold on in the last quarter when Coorparoo were coming hard,’’ he said.
Coorparoo coach Scott Harrison said his side expected a low scoring game that had to be won at the stoppages.
“Wilston Grange’s speed in the first quarter was the difference early.
“They managed the wet conditions and took advantage of it.
“We were able to even the contest later in the game but couldn’t match their speed in the four quarters.
“We took advantage of forward entries in the last quarter to draw close but just fell short.
“The girls can hold their heads up high after a very physical contest in the wet.’’
In Div 2, Mt Gravatt Jindalee had a great spirited game against Noosa, rewarding their mums on Mother's Day with a win.
“It was a great game of football to say thank you for everything that mothers do,’’ said Mt Gravatt Jindalle coach Damien King.
“It was a tough day to be a forward with both sides defenders taking charge. The midfield battle was intense as players, with players putting there bodies on the line all day.
“With the game still on the line late in the game, up stepped Tiana Limperakis in her 100th to kick a classy goal to seal the match.’’
She was then swamped by her teammates. “It was a great reward for the effort Tiana puts in,’’ King said.
And the girls from Tweed Coast Northern Rivers hit the road for the late game at Akuna Oval.
Ground conditions were great for a showdown between two evenly matched sides. “Intensity was riveting from the opening bounce with two outstanding centre lines producing great linkage and energetic footy,’’ said Tweed coach Steve Foreman.
The well coached and disciplined Bears got the jump early with great overlap running and strong positional play.
This meant the girls from NSW had to regroup and rebound, going into quarter time behind. “Tiger stoppage play ramped up with more expansive options created early in the second Quarter. Ruck ascendancy started rolling our way with Billi Hutton well on top,’’ Foreman explained.
“Rover Allanah McNalley exploded out of the blocks and was able to pinpoint great offensive passes to our forwards.
“Defensive play from the Bears was outstanding to watch as they pushed back with grit and determination, finding classy exit options.
“Our depth of running centres gradually wore down the Bears with Heidi Grimster on fire, Jade Rettenmaier, Laini Mostert and Coco Colefax punching bullets back into our forwards.
He said when the rain hit, it was “guts and grind at half back for both sides’’.
“Our backline stood tall with incredible halfback sweeping from Bree Puntigam and magic shutdown discipline from fullback Ash Rettenmaier.’’
“In the end The Tigers were able to enter and hold the ball in the forward 50 for longer and make the Bears pay. with our crumbing forwards Summer Browning, Wren Hynes and Layla Scholl keeping the forward press hot till the end.’’
The Morningside defeated Aspley 5.4.34 to 0.3.3, with Panthers coach Alan McGrath praising his team’s defence.
“ The result would have been much closer, but our defensive unit held off wave after wave of Aspley attack.
“Our inexperienced and bottom age girls continue to improve, with Mia Ferguson and Brianna Hunt showing great improvement, while midfielder Isabelle Bailey had her strongest game of the season so far.’’
