Brisbane State High head of football Tom Dixon said: “It was well deserved. The longer you go without the win, it weighs on you. It gets harder and harder. We’ve almost been there (2-2 draw), we just wanted to stick to our processes.

“I think for us so far, results haven’t reflected our performances.

“Last week against Nudgee, we got to the 60th minute and it was 0-0. The goal from them deflated us. Then there was a passage of 10 minutes where we conceded.

“We haven’t changed too much, and a couple of injuries have come in,” Dixon said about his team building towards this win.

A win, secured by Matt Won, a Year 11 student who came from oblivion to register the first of the year.

“He hadn’t really played or trained too much with the team. He hadn’t played for his own age group. It was his first appearance for the school this season at right wing back,” Dixon said about Won coming into the line-up and delivering.

Toowoomba Grammar drew 1-1 with Churchie

A tale of two halves, Churchie had the upper hand in the first half with more of the play and better chances at goal.

But, Toowoomba stormed home strongly in the second stanza, meaning Churchie had to fight.

And fight they did, repelling Toowoomba on multiple occasions and preventing them from finding the back of the net.

Taku Dohery creating the chances for Toowoomba with his brilliant defence.

Churchie’s best on ground was Luke O’Sullivan, the skipper leading by example when putting his body on the line and controlling the game from his centre midfield role.

Indeed they started the second half strong, hitting the crossbar and forcing some good defensive blocks finding an opener with a brilliant long range effort.

A last minute close range save from goalkeeper Kurt Huppert saw out a superb effort spearheaded by Freddy Brock.

Benji Lam (Brisbane State High)

A small left back, Lam is an x-factor player.

Someone you sit there watching in awe, thinking “wow what a player he is.”

His runs off the ball, support in runs for players in front, and probing to make runs in behind as an attacking fullback are something special according to Dixon.

Roman Galanos (Brisbane State High)

Galanos, someone so much quicker and stronger than his rivals. It’s almost unfair according to Dixon.

“Hearing Roman talk to the players at half time, tactically he knows what is expected and needed,” Dixon said about the highly intelligent Galanos.

“Ipswich weren’t pressing when we played out, and they waited for the pass before they pressed. He identified that quickly, and he communicated that. Making the comment … impressive.”

Lucas Herrington and Quinn MacNicol (Churchie)

Churchie head of football Alex Rados couldn’t split MacNicol and Herrington, both boys tremendous footballers with a knack for the game.

Herrington, a tall, imposing player whose presence on the field gives his teammates confidence.

MacNicol has a great football brain and the ability to create and finish chances in crunch time.

Someone to trust down the stretch.

He knows when to pass, when to take his moments, when to attack players and is always head checking to make sure of things.

A Year 11 who can play in multiple attacking positions.

Logoro has a high work rate and a good eye for goal and he can also be a provider or scorer, making him a very valuable member for any team.

A midfielder who reads the game as good as anyone. Callaghan anticipates the play well and breaks up countless threats in defence all the while possessing a superb passing range to create in attack.
