GPS First XI football returned with a bang as Brisbane Grammar, Ipswich Grammar and Churchie found the winners post in a bumper round 1 of action.

In Toowoomba, a controversial finish set up a 3-3 draw between Gregory Terrace and Toowoomba Grammar.

It was a seesawing affair, with Toowoomba storming out to a 2-0 lead, before Terrace goalscorers Matheus Irelandes-Mota and Sani Logoro pulled it back for a 2-2 half time deadlock.

Then, in the final minute Terrace slotted a free kick to win. Or so they thought, with all but the goalkeeper celebrating.

He was the last man standing as Toowoomba were granted one final chance from the ref to advance the ball and score. And so they did, settling the scores at 3-3 in a bizarre finish.

At Brisbane State High, Churchie clinched a 1-0 victory after a near miss at the end by Churchie.

The man of the hour was Arden Hogan who came off the bench to slot home the winner with a neat finish.

In Ipswich, Southport were tested by an on-fire Ippy’ team who did everything right in a 3-1 win.

And on Miskin Oval, the visiting Brisbane Grammar were all business in a 3-0 job over Brisbane Boys College.

Toowoomba Grammar drew Gregory Terrace 3-3

Kye Richardson (Toowoomba)

On debut, Richardson was great, playing others into the game and not looking one bit out of place.

Richard Dean (Toowoomba)

Dean was always threatening at striker and was no doubt the most dangerous on the field.

He scored the first goal and missed a couple that he should’ve put away. Despite not finishing them, he found himself in goal scoring positions.

Ben Anderson (Toowoomba)

The Toowoomba skipper had a good hit out, leading his side with clear communication and direction.

He kept the spirits up when conceding three consecutive goals.

Sani Logoro (Terrace)

Logoro led the comeback with two crucial goals, one on each side of the half.

Edward Ince (Terrace)

Predicted to be a key player for Terrace, Edward Ince was just that and more on Saturday as his side rallied from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead before a late goal from Toowoomba tied it up.

Ince was so good Toowoomba head of sport Steve Fryer pointed him out saying how impressive he was.

Ipswich Grammar beat Southport 3-1

Hugh Macleod and Zen Pizzinat (Southport)

Rex Oliver (Southport)

Coming off the bench at right wing, Oliver was just what Southport needed. Adding positive energy, Oliver was a super sub whose crosses and overall impact on the game swung momentum in his team’s favour.

Daniel Lindsay (Ipswich)

Could Lindsay have had a better return to the action? Surely not, with the youngster putting in a massive performance at right fullback after missing the last six weeks.

The team felt his presence indeed.

Orlando Corrie (Ipswich)

The word crucial came to mind for Ipswich head of sport Nigel Grieve.

He said Corrie was relentless up and down the park at left back, making things happen whenever he had the ball.

Oliver Purcell (Ipswich)

Purcell was a pain for Southport to contain, at centre midfield he landed on second balls everywhere.

He hunted one-on-one tackles and was the main man in both phases of transition.

Ethan Castle (Churchie)

Churchie’s best on ground, Castle was a workhorse with a never ending engine.

Boasting a phenomenal work rate, Castle put his body on the line and proved a menace for the defence with his penetrating runs.

Luke O’Sullivan (Churchie)

The Churchie First XI skip put in a real captain’s knock, not once backing down in any individual or team battles.

He did not back out of any challenge and controlled the tempo of the game with a fine passing display.

Elias Ali-Sheme (Brisbane State High)

Ali-Sheme was very comfortable on the ball and linked play well with players around him. All the while, creating goal scoring chances for himself and teammates.

Junaid Mirza (Brisbane State High)

A constant threat throughout the game, Mirza used his strength and pace to cause problems to his opponents.

BBC director of football Andrew King praised Msonga, saying for his first GPS First XI outing, he handled the moment with maturity.

Andrew McLeod (Brisbane Grammar)

McLeod, an experienced First XI customer in the Brisbane Roar Youth Academy, was a massive presence at the back for the visiting Brisbane Grammar side and thanks to his efforts, they captured a win.

He did the little things right, getting involved constantly, pushing the ball down field and making sure the game was being played in the other half.

He had a bit of a class about him.
