As Queensland rowers Jacinta Edmunds, Caitlin Cronin and Hamish Parry prepare for Olympic trial events, the next generation has been recognised by national selections.
Thirteen rowers from Toowong, University of Queensland, Commercial, Griffith University Surfers Paradise and KAND Rowing Clubs were already in either the Australian under 21 or Australian under 23 teams, and now they have been joined by a host of under 19 talents..
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the teams will not compete overseas, but they will take part in the World Rowing Cup 3 Simulation Regatta to be held June 11-13 in Penrith.
Their selection follows hot the feels of Sophie Malcolm’s stunning schoolgirl single scull 19 national title win last month, and the naming of the under 19 junior Australian team featuring an array of Queenslanders.
The initial Australian junior selections from Queensland were coxless four team members Fergus Cummins (University of Queensland), Maxwell Taylor (University of Queensland), Mackenzie Branch (Griffith University Surfers Paradise), Lachlan Wright (Griffith University Surfers Paradise) and the Pine Rivers Rowing Club double scull team of Ella Smith and Jaeve Proberts.
But over night there were additions with under 19 Women’s Single Scull going to Sophia Wightman from University of Queensland Boat Club while Nancy Duncan-Banks and Ellyn Hill (both University of Queensland Boat Club) were two of four named in the coaxless fours.
They will also compete at the simulation regatta.
Queenslanders in the Australian under 23 team are: Nicholas Ringelstein (KAND Rowing), Miller Eagle-Rowe (KAND Rowing) - both eights - Darcy McCluskey (University of Queensland Boat Club, coxed fours), Cormac Kennedy-Leverett )Griffith University Surfers Paradise Rowing Club) and Toowong pair Jack Bowser and Tom Williamson (U23 Lightweight Men’s Double Scull) and Wallis Russell (U23 Lightweight Women’s Double Scull).
The under 21 representatives from Queenaland are Coxswain Sadie Ridgway (Toowong Rowing Club), Quadruple Scull athletes Alexandra Rooney (University of Queensland Boat Club, Danica FreeGriffith (University Surfers Paradise Rowing Club) and Sophie Gerber (Toowong Rowing Club), Jarrod Lord and Mitch Salisbury, eights, KAND Rowing Club).
Retired Olympic rower Maddie Edmunds said making the under 19, under 21 or under 23 Australian teams was an important milestone.
“It is very exciting for Queenslanders to have so many on the team,’’ said Edmunds.
“It is a big jump if you don’t make a team from under age to seniors, so this is helpful for the young athletes to see it is achievable, especially racing with senior athletes - it is something to aspire towards.
Eleven years ago Edmunds was a member of the Australian under 23 team which won the world championships and from that experience “we were able to figure out how to be the top in our age group before we stepped up. We knew what it took to get to that (open) level.’’
