Jacinta Edmunds wins world championship silver with the Australia’s Women’s Eight

St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School past student Jacinta Edmunds is a rowing world championships silver medallist after Australia’s Women’s Eight placed at Linz-Ottensheim this morning.

St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School past student Jacinta Edmunds is a rowing world championships silver medallist after Australia’s Women’s Eight placed at Linz-Ottensheim this morning.

With her mother Jenny watching from the sidelines, Edmunds and her crew raised their hands in triumph at the medal presentation.

JACINTA EDMUNDS FORGING HER OWN WAY IN ROWING

The crew, coxed by James Rook, led up until the 1500m mark before race favourites New Zealand edged them out.

The team was Edmunds, Rook, Molly Goodman, Jessica Morrison, Annabelle McIntyre, Rosemary Popa, Georgie Rowe, Bronwyn Cox and Leah Saunders.

Victory continues an extraordinary family tradition by the Edmunds’ clan, with Jacinta following in the footsteps of her father Ian and sister Maddie in representing Australia.

Edmunds was both an Olympic (1984) and world championships bronze medallist while Maddie represented Australia at the Rio Olympics (2016).

“What I can say is that I am very pleased that she broke our family’s run of bronze medals,’’ he joked.

“People in Australia have high expectations of their national team athletes.

“Failing to medal is seen as a failure and our funding models reinforce this.

“What I have learned over the years is that there is a funny thing about world championships and Olympic Games. All the best athletes in the world show up and they are all there wanting to win.

“Achieving this silver medal will give Jacinta and her crew huge belief going into next year and Tokyo, but first they have to gain selection into the boat they have just qualified, so the pressure is ongoing and significant.’’

Edmunds, a past student of Payne Road State School and a Commercial rowing club junior, was now on the cusp of joining her dad and sister as Olympians.

Toowong Rowing Club’s Hamish Parry finished his as Olympians campaign with he and Leon Chambers ranked No. 8 in the world in the Lightweight Men’s Double Scull.

It was a tremendous effort by Parry, a past student of St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace, to qualify for the world championship Australian rowing team.
