THE MATCH

Wavell SHS’s Nayten Iselin-Jansen scored after the siren to beat Marsden SHS 16-12 in the Langer Reserves grand final.

The five-eight snared a 22m drop kick restart 65m out and went on an an extraordinary, match-winning kick and chase surge to the tryline.

It was the first time in the game that Wavell had lead and a piece of sheer brilliance from Iselin-Jansen that will be remembered for a long time.

The rookie ran for his life down the left side, then kicked ahead and won the race to the ball.

The win sparked wild celebrations while Marsden SHS players left the ground in disbelief.

It was a rip-roaring grand final with Marsden sneaking out to 8-nil and 12-6 before Wavell halves Arthur Fitness and Nayten Iselin-Jansen put Xavier Fatamai-Mataia over to score.

A booming sideline conversion from Iselin-Jansen then levelled the scores, setting the seen for a classic finish.

Marsden SHS Dom Sandow was outstanding, twice giving the last pass for tries while organising the defence with talk and being safe under the high ball.

Earlier, Marsden left winger Shane Rapson had a dream start, twice scoring in the corner.

Initially he glided over to score his first try after prop Kees Cassidy had driven his side onto the front foot with one of three early charges.

Quick hands across the line through Horua-Chase and Twidle found Rapson taking the ball in full flight.

Then, after earning a set restart after Marley Lupeomanu had put Twidle away from inside his half, Marsden pressed the go button with another left backline shift that finished with fullback Dom Sandow putting Rapson over.

The fastest man on the field, Wavell’s Kallum Stacey-Weatherall, then lit a bonfire under his team with a blazing dummy half run.

With Wavell on the front foot, Will Sologinkin and Xavier Lui pushed forward, leading to Ethan Jones scoring next to the posts courtesy of crash ball. Marsden SHS lead 8-6.
