A premiership front runner in GPS First XI Football may have been identified yesterday in a contest so good the losing side was congratulated by the referee.
Anglican Church Grammar School director of football Derek Lennon was graceful in defeat after a 4-2 loss to St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace at Churchie.
In what Lennon described as an even contest “fought on a knife’s edge” a decisive victory was nonetheless secured by the visitors with two goals in the last two minutes.
“We were pretty good today; it was a good quality game,” Lennon said.
“We wish them well and think they have a strong chance of winning the premiership.”
Despite windy weather which “definitely had an impact on the game” the football was of such standard that Lennon was congratulated by the referee despite the loss, which he said does not happen very often.

Another contender, The Southport School, had to fight for every inch yesterday to secure its 3-2 victory against Brisbane Grammar School at Southport
But it was TSS attacking midfielder Josh Dimarco’s boot that spelled the death knell for BGS with the player of the match scoring twice.
TSS director of football Joe Dolan said the game was always going to be close against a good side and although TSS dominated possession they couldn’t finish the visitors off who made them work until the very end.
“We needed to score more goals but our defence was excellent and I do appreciate scoring is the hardest thing to do in football,” Dolan said
The football director said Dimarco created several goal scoring opportunities for the side and secured his two in the net amid very high pressure situations.
A forceful win ahead of a bye next week left St Joseph’s Nudgee College, another outfit well positioned, in place for a strong season finish as they vanquished rivals Toowoomba Grammar School 3-nill in Boondall.
“It was a really good day under difficult conditions on a hard pitch,” Nudgee director of football Jamie Pybus said.
The win comes with the help of “excellent” performances from Rohan Astbury in defence and Kes Isaac in attack.
Pybus said the side looked forward to a well-deserved rest next week “to finish the season nice and strongly”.
Ipswich Grammar School played a very successful game against Brisbane Boys College to come away with a 3-nil win despite very challenging, windy conditions.
Goals were scored by Cooper Nichols (Year 12), Ryan Stieler (Year 12) and Ethan Frazer (Year12).
“The team put up a solid defence with skilled performances from Benji Binney (Year 10), right back and Isaac Bracker (Year 12) centre back,” IGS coach Andrew Catton said.
“Henry Blackledge (Year 9) showcased his talent in his first starting appearance in goal.”
