India rips through Australia, takes 2-0 lead in the series

He is not quite in the league of Toowoomba Grammar School’s greatest sporting old boys like Jason Little, Martin Love, Matthew Denny, Ray Colbert, Isaac Cooper, Wade Seccombe and co yet, but TGS’s Chace Oates is one talented sportsman.

And so is Brisbane Boys College’s James Alexander, captain of the undefeated GPS First XI pacesetters who continues to contribute with bat and ball - and through his leadership.

ROUND 4 MATCH REPORT HERE

TGS’s Chace Oates continues to impress this First XI cricket season with another entry into our Players of the Round following his impressive effort in a beaten side last Saturday.

Oates scored 51 (50 balls) threatening BBC’s towering total of 248

This followed his round 1 performance when he scored 50 (48 balls) after late last year playing some representative Lord’s Taverners cricket for the Sunshine Coast.

All this from an elite rugby union player who represented Queensland Reds under 16s last season and made the Australian under 16 development squad.

And the cousin of Broncos and Origin winger Corey Oates can play rugby league as well, don’t worry, having last season represented the Darling Downs 16-18 years side while earlier in his career playing for the Queensland 14-15 years side.

Alexander is also a true all-rounder. The 2023 BBC College Captain, is also the Captain of Cricket - after playing First XV rugby last season as a halfback.

And in December he captained the Queensland under 17 to the national championship victory.

This season he is contributing with his new ball pace bowling, and top order batting.

Last weekend he scored 79 not out and then took 3-35 from 10 overs.

Both Oates and Alexander made our GPS First XI Players of the Week. Who joined them?

The left arm Year 10 orthodox spinner was the fifth bowler used, but he made the wait worth it with a bewildering spell of 10-7-14-4 that extinguished any chance of a Brisbane Grammar School victory. He also applied himself late in the batting order when every run was gold, scoring 18 in 51 minutes.

Ted Waterman (TSS)

The right arm outswing bowler nipped the crust of the BGS innings with the crucial double break through to snare BGS’s top scored Ollie Spence (23) and Sam Wallwork after they had worked hard to reach 1-39 chasing 148.

Griff Williams and Zac McDermott (TSS)

The fast bowling pair were at it again, strangling the opposition early which inflicted untold pressure on BGS batting line-up. Williams actually went wicketless, but his 6-1-10-0 burst complemented Waterman’s wicket taking while McDermott was hard to get away early, and took wickets later. Williams also scored 25 runs before being run out.

Ollie Spence and Soham Sane (BGS)

The boys tried hard with bat and ball in an outclassed side. Spence top scored for his side and also took 2-24 while Sane missed out with the bat but caused some ripples with the ball during a new ball effort that yielded 3-32.

The high class all-rounder made a match high 79 in a game where BBC needed every run to lift themselves to safety against a pesky TGS. He then claimed 3-35 with his right arm pace bowling, keeping his cool in his second spell to remove Chace Oates and then the dangerous TGS tail gunners Webster and Dean.

Oscar Shaw (BBC)

Shaw had a terrific match with bat and ball and in the field. Initially with 41 not out he shared a lethal late stand with Liam O’Higgins (27) which proved the difference. He then ran out TGS’s top scorer, Joe Sippel (51) and claimed the vital wicket of Thisaja Samarawickrama.

Chace Oates (TGS)

BBC should have been safe having posted 248, but Oates ensured the visitors kept looking over their shoulders with a run-a-ball half century. Indeed TGS were in the box seat when Oates reached his 50 at 4-189.

NUDGEE COLLEGE V BRISBANE STATE HIGH

Mathew Fielding and Bailey Todd (Nudgee)

Fielding (73) and Todd (79) didn’t give State High much of a chance with their whopping 113 run stand.

Fielding dazzled as opening batsmen, hitting two sixes and seven fours while Todd excelled with rotating the strike, scoring 65 of his 79 boundary-free.

The partnership proved crucial as once the pair departed from the crease, a flurry of single digit scores followed.

Jack Sonter (Brisbane State High)

Sonter stood tall at No. 3 while the Nudgee bowlers stormed on with five quick wickets. The Western Suburbs cricketer who made our Lord’s Taverners Team of the Year scored a gritty 42 off 51 with six boundaries. He did well to keep out Nudgee’s on song Angus McLean.

McLean was firing. He bowled four maidens, took four wickets and only leaked 19 runs. He had a day out that any fast bowler dreams about. Two wickets in their first spell. A break, then back into the attack for a second spell and two more wickets.

IPSWICH GRAMMAR V GREGORY TERRACE

Kori Ramsden and Luke Sanderson (Ipswich)

Openers Ramsden (25) and Sanderson (25) got their side off to a great start with a forty run partnership. Ramsden found the fence four times, while Sanderson was running superbly between the wickets, earning all 25 of his runs without the help of a boundary.

When at the bowling crease, Ramsden removed Terrace’s top scorer, and the important wickets of Tomm Jeffries and Angus Kelly.

Dinek Kinigama (Ipswich)

Once Ramsden was dismissed, Kinigama (52) came in and joined Sanderson with expert communication and effort when running between the wickets. They combined well for a 50 run stand.

Kinigama scored 42 with an array of quick singles, and well ran two’s and three’s. Indeed the top three’s ability not to rely on thumping the ball to the boundary and instead knock it around to keep the scoreboard ticking would have made coach xx happy.

James Eustance and Angus Kelly (Terrace)

These two bowled admirably to keep Ipswich to 188, which normally is quite an achievable target.

What was extra impressive was the fact they sent Ipswich’s top four batsmen back to the pavilion, and Eustance especially was economical as ever, leaking just 25 runs off his 10 overs.

High praise to opener Theo bacalakis (36) who withstood a charging Ippy bowling attack for 93 deliveries, while wickets were falling rapidly at the other end.
