Team of the Week; Schoolboy sways local derby grand final

Who made our latest Club cricket Team of the Week? We reveal all here, along with the top three players from four grade grand finals last weekend.

DISASTER! Aussies lose 9 in 91 minutes!

South Brisbane won two grade premierships yesterday as club cricket moved into the business end of the season.

Sandgate-Redcliffe (third grade), Western Suburbs (fourth grade), South Brisbane (fifth grade) and South Brisbane again (sixth grade) claimed silverware in the one day competition.

In this story we honour the best three players from each final, as well as presenting the Team of the Week.

HERE’S 80 HIGH ACHIEVERS OF CLUB CRICKET

In the third grade final Nudgee schoolboy Dane Nielsen anchored Sandgate-Redcliffe’s third grade to its premiership win over Norths in a local derby, with Neilsen batting 34 overs for his 51 not out.

Nielsen added a crucial 65 with the baby of the side, Year 10 St Patrick’s College student Steve Hogan (36), before Hogan’s brother Murdoch (15 not out) teamed with Nielsen to ensure victory.

Norths talented swing bowler Adriane Morrison (3-28), having dismissed Mat Fielding early, then put a scare through the Gators camp with two quick wickets.

But Nielsen and Murdoch Hogan kept their heads and Sandgate reached the victory target of 125. Hogan earlier took two wickets.

Here we name our 3-2-1 best players from the four grand finals.

THIRD GRADE

NORTHS v SANDGATE-REDCLIFFE

3: Dane Nielsen (Gators): Nielsen underpinned his team’s pursuit of 125, maintaining concentration during a 34 over stint that saw partners come and go. He displayed a great temperament.

2. Bailey Reed (Gators): St Patrick’s old boys Reed (2-14) and Ben Buechler (2-17) eroded the Norths innings with pressure from dot balls and wickets, with Reed’s medium pace most difficult to get away.

1. Alexander Procopis (Norths): The classy all-rounder from the winning Queensland under 17 side produced a match high 69 under the pressure of a grand final. Impressively he batted time and did everything possible to give his side a total to bowl at.

FOURTH GRADE

UNIVERSITY v WESTERN SUBURBS

3. Tom Stevenson (Wests): Stevenson was at the peak of his powers with an extraordinary performance that netted him 5-12, an effort which restricted Uni to 143. He had helpers, with Alex Francis (3-23) and Lachlan Brennan (1-20) doing their bit, but Stevenson was the matchwinner.

2. Alex Francis (Wests): Having not done enough with the ball, Francis swatted a quickfire 33 not out (18 balls) to ease tension in a hurry and get his side past the winners post. Wests were an unsteady 7-117 when he unleashed, supported at the other end by Brennan.

1. James Guy (Uni): Opener Guy dug in to ensure his side give Wests something to chase. He stood over his bat for two-thirds of the innings, giving Uni a foundation to launch a late assault.

FIFTH GRADE

SOUTH BRISBANE v VALLEY

3. Samim Ehsan (Souths): Ehsan batted the house down alongside Zach De Bruin (61 not out), giving Souths a flystart. He faced just 33 balls, including five sixes, and before Valley knew it Souths had 100. And then he starred with the ball to take 4-33.

2. Hilton Stephens (Valley): The grand final was as flat as a tact for Valley supporters when Stephens went bash, crash and wallop. With Valley 5-28, and 7-59, he slammed 77 from just 96 balls and it was a shame he could not push onto a century. Well done to Lachlan McRae for the support he provided.

1. Zach De Bruin (Souths): Ehsan was Flash Dan but De Bruin a more cultured performer in setting up Souths premiership triumph. De Bruin produced a season high score when it counted most, with his 61 not out enabling Ehsan and Jack Hurst (23 not out) the freedom to back their batting skills. Hurst also took two wickets and De Bruin one.

SIXTH GRADE

SOUTH BRISBANE v NORTHS

3. Jacob Arratoon (Souths): Arratoon produced a season high 76 in the most important match of the season to drive South Brisbane into the box seat. Chasing 149 for victory, Arratoon and his opening partner Malcolm Bartlett 41, (49 balls) set up the innings with an opening stand of 97.

2. Malcolm Bartlett (Norths): Aside from his batting deeds, Bartlett also broke the crucial partnership between David Brain and Nathan Hooper during the Norths innings. That run out complemented an excellent team bowling performance by Souths.

1. Nathan Hooper (Norths): Hooper let fly with an innings saving 51, a whirlwind counter attack when Norths innings was sliding away. He hit five fours and three sixes during a 67 ball innings that rescued his side from 5-55. David Brain also gave solid support (37).

George Hayward. 160* (263). Wynnum-Manly. Men’s Second Grade

Hayward had his way on the Shaw Park track, smacking an unbeaten 160 against Norths. The opener got things going in style, hitting 11 fours and three sixes in his 263 ball effort which saw him see out the full 96 overs.

Breanna Craven 114* (65). University of QLD. U19 Female Competition

Craven set the match alight with a dazzling 114, boundaries, sixes and quick singles all highlights in her sensational knock. You have to be seeing them well to stroke it at two-a-ball.

Naomi Vare. 115* (168). Western Suburbs. Women’s First Grade

There’s little wonder why the Sunny Coast and UQ would be wary of Wests gaining on them, when they possess openers like Naomi Vare (115*) and Naiya Varidel (42). A pair that, on their day, can help their side over the finish line against any team. At the weekend, only four Wests batsmen were glimpsed in the 50 overs, that’s how comfortable centurion Vare and her partner in crime Varidel felt at the batting crease.

Emmanuel Lucky Peterson. 146 (229). South Brisbane. Men’s Second Grade

Peterson almost completed the innings from start to finish, had Redlands wickettaker Thomas Biggs not intervened late in the day. Peterson plugged the gaps all day, sending 15 on their way for four and three over the rope on the full as South Brisbane posted 320.

Lachlan Mark. 110 (224). Toombul. Men’s Second Grade

Mark posted 110 in a great display of poise, concentration and patience. The Toombul opener played every ball to its merits and was rewarded in the end with a classy 110 off 224, making a living with his running between the wickets.

Georgie Boyce. 71* (64). Sunshine Coast. Women’s First Grade

Boyce must have had dinner plans on the weekend such was the rush she was in to chase Valley’s total of 135. She would have been fashionably early after thumping a quick 71 to push Sunny Coast to the total in just 22 overs.

Jehan Daniel. 109 (150). Wynnum-Manly. Men’s First Grade

Coming in at 5-55, nobody would have thought a century was in store for No.7 Jehan Daniel.
Except for Daniel, who catapulted his side to 237 by the time he was finished.

His superb innings, which allowed Wynnum-Manly to post a formidable 256, included four sixes and nine fours.

Robyn Medley. 5/11 off 6. Wynnum-Manly. Women’s Second Grade

Medley had her way with both bat and ball to steer her team to an easy win over the Sunny Coast. After coming in at 2-12, and leaving at 8-126, Medley built a crucial innings of 47. Then, if getting her team out of a sticky situation wasn’t good enough, she tore through her rival’s top order. In her six overs she bagged a fifer and only leaked 11 runs, earning a victory quick smart.

Tom Stevenson 5/12 off 7. Western Suburbs. Men’s Fourth Grade

See above with our 3-2-1’s.

Zoe Valencic. 5/31 off 10. Sandgate-Redcliffe. Women’s First Grade

Valencic was on song with the ball, claiming a terrific fifer to limit the Gold Coast to 158. Had Taylor Stumer (57), Tess Cooper (39), Mia Croucamp (28) and Charlotte Lutz (14) not stepped up with the bat, Valencic’s batting prowess would have been called upon.

Jaxon Eyles. 6/37 off 16.5. Sandgate-Redcliffe. Men’s Fourth Grade

Champion pace bowler Jaxon Eyles was firing at the bowling crease, putting on a show at his home ground. He bowled four maidens, took six wickets and only leaked 37 in his 16.5 overs.

He had a day every bowler wishes for- wickets in every spell.
