The South Sydney Rabbitohs have launched a daring raid into Broncos territory to snare rising centre star Dean Tauaa from Mabel Park SHS.
Tauaa, who will captain his school in Wednesday’s crucial Langer Trophy clash against Redcliffe SHS, has been snapped up by the southern raiders.
Tauaa, a cousin of Canberra and Queensland Maroons champion Josh Papali’i, had been nurtured by the Broncos in its academy over the last few years.
Brisbane wanted to keep the Logan Brothers junior, but South Sydney has made Tauaa an offer too good to refuse as the club looks toward Queensland to help find next generation players.
First grade players like Jye Gray and Liam Le Blanc and top 30 contract winger Haizyn Mellars, a Maroons development squad member, were all members of the 2022 Queensland schoolboys winning side.
Tauaa most likely would have played for the 2025 Queensland schoolboys, but was unavailable for the trials due to injury.
Tauaa is a dynamic centre whose running game is unmatched in his age group.
But it is off the field where Tauaa earns even more plaudits.
His club coach in the U17 Wynnum Manly club side this season, Jon Buchanan, said Tauaa was “wonderful young man who works hard at all aspects of his footy’’.
“He is always in the gym, his prep is outstanding and he is really coachable. He is someone who has an appetite for growth in his game.
Buchanan said Tauaa was “confident but also humble’’.
“Some can get ahead of themselves. He does not get ahead of himself.’’
Tauaa said his cousin Josh Papali’i had inspired him to strive for his NRL dream.
“My cousin, he has been a big influence on my life and my family. He is the first one in our family to play NRL,’’ Tauaa said.
Redcliffe SHS will host Mabel Park at Kayo Stadium on Wednesday at 3.30pm in a vital match.
Mabel Park and Redcliffe both have two wins this season, although Redcliffe have an extra point from its abandoned match against PBC SHS last Wednesday due to the storm.
But the winner of this game could decide who finishes in the top five and qualifies for the semi-finals.
Importantly for Redcliffe, outstanding prop Cody Starr is set to return and play his first match of the Langer season after being disrupted by injury.
