Club rugby: Women’s wrap; colts 1 Team of the Week

Club rugby: Who won the big women’s clash between GPS and Norths? And who made the Colts 1 Team of the Week? All revealed here.

Norths’ senior women stood tall to challenge heavyweights GPS before the Galloping Greens came over the top of their rivals 29-5 in an entertaining club rugby clash at Hugh Courtney Oval this morning.

The Eagles soared to gain parity during the first half, both on the scoreboard and in the run of the match, before the GPS star power rose to the top to outpoint their rivals.

Tries to inside centre Sian Lavea, replacement winger Tabihta Cleary and lock Anna Nasalo propelled GPS from a 10-all lead into a 22-5 advantage midway through the second half and all of a sudden Norths were out of reach.

But it was a battle royale in the first half, despite GPS scoring first after a brilliant sideline run by Kali Mafi off a Adi Unaisi Biau pass, led to a penalty try.

Running free Mafi looked home, but Norths fullback Jess Nugent refused to give up on the chase, making a try saving tackle, only for an off side tackle infringement in the ensuing scrimmage leading to the penalty try.

But Norths deservedly struck back soon after, attacking a wide blindside which Nugent exploited.

Clever Eagles No.10 Caitlin Stewart had called play to her right and offered winger Jasmine O’Dwyer a chance to combine with Nugent who put her foot into touch as she was about to score.

But Nugent could not be denied soon after, scoring her team’s first try down the right hand side.

Norths flanker Korbyn Broomhall then made a try saving tackle on GPS’ Unaisi Biau, but Lavea could not be denied for GPS just before halftime.

GPS started the second half with renewed vigour, and it was no surprise when Cleary went over out wide after Biau, Emilya Byrne and Lavea had combined.

Then, after sustained pressure, impressive lock Nasalo galloped over under the posts from 15m out and GPS were on their way to victory.

In other women’s matches this weekend, University had a 36-19 win over Bond Uni, Sunnybank accounted for Souths 19-5 and Easts got rolling against Brothers 73-5.

University coach Derby Malaulau said it was a team performance and “all players played a pivotal role in allowing us to get over the top of Bond’’.

But inparticular Roni Setu, Tess Evans, Greta Gowan, Chanelle Kohima and captain Caitlin Urwin led the way.

“Tess Evans kept the points ticking over with her boot, Roni led the charge while Greta, Chanelle and Caitlin paved the way with clean ball and accuratecatch pass.’’

He said there was a big improvement across the board as the side continued to build on basic skills.

Rosemary Vodo-Rasova, Luana Tongia and Renae Nona all scored for Sunnybank on their way to winning.

Souths best were hooker/prop Kayda Salakaia “who carried hard all day and took it to the Sunnybank forwards physically’’ praised Souths coach David Baldwin.

“Our halfback Gracie Wright punched above her weight in attack and defence while putting her body on the line on multiple occasions to continually stop bigger Sunnybank players,’’ Baldwin added.

Although losing to University, Bond coach Setu Naseri said Dainne Waight scored a sensational try with an individual burst, while Elisha Godsiff and Imogen Hei never stopped trying.

JJ Faleono also added impact off the bench for Bond.

In Easts big win, Theresa Soloai scored three tries, as did Rosie Ebbage in the victory.

Tigers coach Craig Wilson said Ally Kemp, Soloai and Maggie Glassock were his best win the win.

Meanwhile, in colts 1 action today, Souths rejuvenation continued with a 36-7 win over Sunnybank in a southside derby while Brothers claimed the big clash of the round over Easts at Crosby Park. Brothers won 31-5.

Magpies coach Cian O’Connor said the fast start he was looking for was delivered by his players.

“Ryley Beriton on the wing scored three tries while Kullen Pamatatu at fullback was good and No.8 Leandro Tupi made inroads all game on the carry,’’ O’Connor praised.

Sunnybank coach Brendan Underwood said against good opposition executing well, the team’s defence and strategy they had worked on all week did not hold up.

“Our midfield defence was also challenged by Souths and a few missed tackles cost us valuable metres and momentum,’’ Underwood said.

“We were then chasing the scoreboard in the second half but started to execute defence and attack plays and place pressure on Souths.’’

He said aside from scoring, Sunnybank fellow just short of two other tries.

“We were very proud of what we could achieve up against a very good Souths side,’’ he said.

Best for Sunnybank was halfback Jayvan Scarff who had a lot of influence over the attack, while flankers Fehi Mahina and Senior Pulega shone.

GPS colts got on the board with a win after a fly-start saw them lead 14-nil following tries to Michael Toohey and Sebastia Sialau.

Another try to tall prop Darcy Hammond, followed by Sialau’s third conversion, gave GPS breathing space 21-nil. GPS eventually won 21-7.

GPS coach Sio Kite said Sialau at five-eight, Lachlan Howse to flanker and prop Dan Frannetovich played strongly.

“We improved our physicality and kept it simple,’’ he said.

Norths coach Dan Ritchie said it was a “difficult game to get into’’ with lots of penalties and as a result his group were frustrated knowing they can play better.

“But once again a large penalty count hurt us,’’ Ritchie said.

In the drawn game (29-all) between University and Bond, Bond trio Harrison Usher (prop), Zane Misios (No.8) and classy back Ethyn Martin leading the way for Bond.

University had a ding-dong battle with Bond University at St Lucia, with Bond scoring three tries (Zane Misios, Harrison Usher and Carsen Patu) only to trail 17-15 before tries to Misios and Patu again put them ahead 29-24.

University of Queensland’s tries were scored by imposing No.8 Fergus Nasser, Ethan McFarland and Michael Van Der Schyff.

Brothers have checked another rival off the list on their way to a Colts 1 premiership with a convincing 31-5 victory over East’s at Crosby Park.

Brothers were not only the more physical side but the more polished side too.

Although East’s had them in size, the Brothers backline clicked all afternoon with crisp plays and magical tries to defend their home turf.

Brothers flyhalf Benn Dallecort and centre Tim Ryan were incredible. If it wasn’t for Dallecort’s playmaking and Ryan’s finishing, it would’ve been a different story.

Dallecort was masterful when dabbing a grubber kick down the left touch line for centre Tim Ryan swooping through to score the first try of the day. Dallecort’s awareness of the game and gifted play making ability is evident in moments like these where he makes something out of nothing.

Hardworking Brothers flanker Jack Condon said: “ I think out forwards in their set piece, and our lineouts were outstanding. Tim Ryan had a great game as always.”

“I was just trying to work hard, be there for everyone and make sure we are backing eachother up,” Condon said.

The next to strike for Brothers was gun halfback Oscar Varricchio. Although Varricchio earned his team five points with a cracking scoot to score, his encouragement, service, and speed to the breakdowns is what gave Brothers the edge.

Dallecort conjured some more magic to extend the lead at 19-0, putting in a 60m kick which saw flanker Ollie Harvey capitalise and get the Brothers supporters on their feet.

Easts flanker Henry Wilson scored his team’s only points of the game when crashing over with a pick-and-drive.

Ryan was relentless, piling on more points for his team with a simple try to earn himself a double and extend Brothers lead at 24-5.

Reserve Rory Slevin had the last say when he settled the scores at 31-5 just before the full-time whistle.

Brothers ran away winners once again.

Brothers head coach Greg Beaver said: “I was happy with our fight and intensity today. We spoke about having a soft belly against UQ and we challenged the boys to step the contact up.”

“It was a really good team effort. Robbie Mapa was outstanding. Tim Ryan keeps getting better every week. Oscar controlled the game really well from halfback.”

“His running game, and speed to the breakdowns allowed us to get on the front foot. Cooper Bridgeman was a standout,” Beaver said.
