After an agonising defeat at the hands of Ormiston College and the rain preventing the following fixtures, St Columban’s College had their best game of the season to overcome a spirited Canterbury College.
Ormiston continued to roll out unblemished team performances, defeating CHAC 78-0.
So who has made our Team of the Week following this weekend’s round?
Fullback: Alex Georgiades (JPC)
Alex had a controlled performance from fullback. His constant communication and deft touch with the boot helped throughout the game to keep his team on the front foot in attack and defence.
Wing: Dylan Penniket (Ormiston)
Penniket scored a pair of tries in one half of football, before being taken off to allow substitutions to come in. Ormiston assistant coach Kris Peterman said he was electric out wide.
Centre: Matt Hayes (WestMAC)
Hayes was outstanding in a losing effort on Saturday, working his guts off all day. WestMAC coach Shane Toll said: “He was outside centre but in the forwards too. He was everywhere.”
Centre: Bailey Murphy (Canterbury College)
Murphy was monumental in a losing side on Saturday afternoon. The inside centre carried the ball strongly and made some big defensive efforts with strong contact.
Flyhalf: Ryan FitzGerald (Columbans)
FitzGerald was a force in Columbans most convincing win of the season, beating Canterbury 41-12. He was supposed to be at the State Championships, but with that cancelled he put on a clinic, his coach Riley Brown saying he was “immense in defence.” He stepped in and played flyhalf for the team. In attack he led the team around really well.
Flyhalf: Hugo Hobbs (Ormiston)
Ormiston assistant coach Kris Peterman said: “ He did a great job moving the ball around once we established some go-forward through our forwards. He scored a couple of tries himself, and worked well with Laif Williams.”
If it wasn’t one it was the other Peterman said.
“That’s our game plan. That these boys can interchange 10 and 12.”
Wing: Jamal Meena (Ormiston)
Meena had a great game at No.15 to help Ormiston beat CHAC 78-0. Ormiston assistant coach Kris Peterman said: “he was good ust linking in out wide. He scored a couple of tries as well. His kick returns were great too. Always keen to counter-attack, slicing through.” Meena was named on the wing to ensure the best 15 players were selected in the Team of the Week.
Halfback: Lucas Wood (Ormiston)
Wood was excellent with great service from scrumhalf. He had some strong tackles and good carries. The versatile No.9 even had a stint at flyhalf. Assistant coach Kris Peterman said: “ His passing game is so good that he can distribute from there.”
No.8: Beni Allen (JPC)
Allen was a strong performer again with the Broncos signed young gun having a damaging game running the ball. JPC coach Joshua Kron said: “Allen was destructive with the ball in hand and on defence.”
No.8: Oscar Torrens (Columbans)
Torrens had been playing a make-shift loosehead prop for the first few games, but stepped back to No.8 on Saturday and had his best game of the season. Torrens was Columbans best in attack and defence.Columbans coach Riley Brown said: “He led the team around really well. In our lineouts he was great too.”
Flanker: Jacob Lyons (Columbans)
Columbans captain Jacob Lyons led the boys well when under pressure, and redirected them through his actions. Coach Riley Brown said he was good in all areas, especially in the lineouts.
Flanker: Harrison Franklin (Canterbury)
Franklin was a workhorse on Saturday afternoon. He toiled away in all the tight work and left it all out on the paddock. The second rower was named at flanker to ensure the best 15 players were selected in the Team of the Week.
Lock: Andrew Casey (JPC)
Casey has his first start at lock this season and had an instant impact with rock solid defence and safe hands under the kick-off. He was in every ruck and was both physical and dominant all game.
Lock: Angus Melville (Ormiston)
Melville got a double for Ormiston on Saturday. He had some big charges through the middle of the field and capitalised when making field position. Melville managed to bust through the defence and was rewarded for his ball-running.
Prop: Liam Theron (WestMAC)
In the front row Theron performed outstanding again. He was the go-to forward, breaking the line against a really big forward pack. Coach Shane Toll said: “He did about eight line breaks which was amazing.”
Hooker: Liam McGreggor (St Paul’s)
Prop: Oscar Neuendorf-King (CHAC)
