St Peters Lutheran College have triumphed 22-11 in a midweek clash over St Patrick’s College at Curlew Park.

A superb swarm of loud Patties students cheered on from the sideline in what felt like a grand final fixture.

War cries, chants and a sea of green were provided by proud Patties’ schoolboys in a valiant attempt to help their team get their first win of 2022.

Year 11 St Patrick’s winger James Boland was spritely when thinking about the Patties’ First XV future.

He said: “We have a good team next year. Half of the crew is Year 11s. We have some big bodies. For example our hooker Manaaki Bateman who’s in Year 10. So a lot to come.”

The Big Brothers and Little Brothers (Year 12s and Year 5s) walked down with each other from the school to support the game on Wednesday afternoon.

“The support today was great. Especially when you hear your name, and know all your mates are behind you,” Boland said.

St Peters centre Jirra Twist almost slid into the St Patrick’s army of supporters when scoring the first five-pointer of the afternoon. Flyhalf Wallace Charlie sent a gorgeous flat pass to Twist who was steaming through the line.

Towering Lock Vice Latu dived over for St Peters second consecutive try with an unstoppable pick-and-drive to extend the lead at 15-6 in the 28th minute.

St Peters kept piling on the points with Cowboys bound Jirra Twist scoring a magnificent try. Halfback Ethan Pass found centre Kuwanon Dickman breaking through the line. Dickman offloaded to Twist who muscled his way over to score.

On a puddly Curlew Park surface where it was hard to keep possession, St Patrick’s winger Ben Murphy returned the ball incredibly well. Murphy looked safe under the high ball and continued to move his team up the field.

Their halves combination of Jacob Prlja and Sam Condon stood out, steering their team around the park as well as creating scoring opportunities.

Their centres in Josh Smith and Nick Hastie were determined when running the ball however St Peters defence held strong.

Sam Condon was finally rewarded for his leadership and grit when offloading the ball to lock Eli Avci who scored his team’s first try of the afternoon. The loyal Patties’ crowd finally got what they wanted.

Peters No.8 Barney Radel continued to make his case as the best No.8 in AIC First XV rugby with another 70 minutes of damaging ball running. Radel and his team came away 22-11 winners.

St Peters Jirra Twist said: “Next year I am going to live in Townsville and train in the U18 Cowboys Academy.”

“I can’t wait, it’s going to be awesome.

Twist is from Cairns and is a boarder at the Indooroopilly Campus. He said his goal after school is to make the NRL.

“I just have to work hard, stay dedicated and keep pushing myself.”

Twist said he tries to base the way he plays around Parramatta Eels winger Maika Sivo.

“He is a real hard runner.”
