Hayden Brough scored a breakthrough 124 for St Joseph’s Nudgee College while Toowoomba Grammar School, Brisbane Boys College and St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace claimed round one wins in GPS First XI cricket today.

In a tense encounter between Brisbane Boys College and Brisbane State High School, BBC defended 170, helped by an amazing catch from Blake Davis, a boarder from Lismore.

“I reckon it is the best schoolboy catch I have seen. A left handed screamer.,’’ said BBC director of cricket David Marriott.

More comfortable was Nudgee’s win over Anglican Church Grammar School (172) while an Aubrey Stockdale-inspired Terrace surged from behind, rallying from 3-33 batting first to post 196. Terrace then defend the total against Ipswich Grammar School (136).

On the Darling Downs, Toowoomba Grammar School all-rounder Mitchell Doolan (71 not out and 2-21) powered his side to victory, with TGS scoring 2-158 in just 30 overs to reel in Brisbane Grammar School’s 155.

Doolan hit as many sixes (five) as he did boundaries, and his 94 run stand with a measured Tom Sippel (54, 113 minutes) proved decisive.

For BGS, Angus Tolhurst counterattacked with 44 (53 balls) while Hugh Weibgen (37, 66 balls) showed signs of a promising season to come.

This was after BGS openers Nowlan and Lockhart had added 42 for the first wicket.

Doolan took two wickets while Taj Glenn and Sippel were also part of an outstanding team bowling effort by TGS.

REVEALED: The greatest GPS batsman

Doolan was classy with the bat and effective with the ball, but the performance of round one came from Nudgee’s Brough whose run-a-ball 124 was the innings of his life.

Brough, blooded in a handful of matches last season, used his feet to the spinners and ran splendidly between the wickets.

Taller and stronger this season, Brough was aggressive between the wickets and as his innings progressed, Brough’s timing also helped him to 14 fours and two sixes.

Possessing a lovely technique, Brough’s occupation of the crease enabled Nudgee’s line-up to bat around him, with Tom Balkin (39) the most prominent support act.

When Churchie batted, Nudgee new ball bowler Noah McFayden, with a dozen games of first grade experience under his belt for Norths, bowled tightly to concede just eight runs from his opening five overs.

Balkin, Mills and McDonald also kept a lid on things, but Churchie did not throw in the towel.

Rueben Burger (20) displayed intent, Jesse Sia (33) was positive and Campbell Corrigan (23) defiant, but when McFayden returned for his second spell he claimed Corrigan and Churchie were 4-103, still needing 158 from 20 overs.

Jackson Mills (2-27) did a splendid support job for Nudgee when he entered the fray as Churchie were bowled out for 172.

BRISBANE GRAMMAR SCHOOL’S ALL-TIME FIRST XI

At Oakman Park, BSHS’s Luke Hatherell, the brother of tearaway Sam Hatherell, ripped through the BBC middle order.

But it was off-spinner Alex Maynard, at the other end of the pace scale, who initially dragged BSHS back into the contest after BBC had raced to 0-40 from five overs.

Maynard bowled 10-1-27-2, and by the time he finished his spell in the 24th over, BBC had been restricted to 3-103 from 24 overs.

Hatherell, shirt out and menacing, then returned for a spell of 4-0-12-2 to erode the BBC batting.

BBC batsmen Lachlan Marschke (14) and Ali Zaidi (28 not out) stopped the rot, but BBC’s innings tailed away.

Zaidi, busy and inventive, looked an excellent prospect and had BSHS’s bowling been slightly less disciplined, he would have been even more productive on the score sheet.

BCC openers Angus Goffage (22) and Max Daldy (43) were also well tempered in adding 62 for the first wicket, and it was a surprise when Goffage was dismissed by Maynard.

Maynard also claimed the threatening Daldy in his last over, capping a fantastic round one effort.

IS CHURCHIE’S GREATEST FIRST XI THE BEST GPS SIDE OF ALL-TIME?

Although they dropped a couple of catches, BSHS’s ground fielding was good and it complemented the tight bowling unit.

When BBC arrived at the bowling crease after lunch, Will Gibson and Bayley Judson took two wickets each, and then Marschke also claimed a wicket with his spin, but BSHS battled on.

It was not until Gibson returned from his second spell that BBC looked likely victors.

Gibson, a swing bowler who enjoys his place in the college pipe band, claimed two quick wickets to go with his two early scalps and as a result BSHS were 7-81.

Even then Bevan and McMillan rallied for BSHS and the match hung in the balance, but BSHS were eventually dismissed for 135.

WHO IS BSHS’S GREATEST CRICKETER

At Ipswich, IGS threw a spanner in the works by dismissing two Australian players, Tobias Snell and Luke Davies early on, but Terrace rose to win comfortably.

At one stage during the morning Terrace were 6-117, but a lower order rescue operation was constructed by Cory Eglinton (28), Aubrey Stockdale (48) and Will Campbell (19 not out) which enabled Terrace to reach a more than competitive 8-196 on a response pitch.

Stockdale, an Australian under 18 fast bowling representative, was promoted in the batting order to give Terrace some momentum, and he did that in spades.

When IGS went out to bat, it was the Stockdale-Davies-Jeremy White show, with Stockdale and Davies claiming two early wickets apiece.

White then speared in to clean-up the tail, taking 4-28 and the Terrace recovery from complete.

Terrace Director of cricket Blair Copelin was delighted with the team performance given the opposition and the conditions.

He praised Stockdale for his effort in lifting Terrace toward 200 in the first innings.

Jack Pilgrim supported Stockdale and Davies with the ball, with Pilgrim’s first five overs going for just 1-5 before White took the final three wickets.

Bell (43) batted nicely for IGS while Anderson (21 not out) held out while under pressure.
