GPS, AIC cricket set to be called off for the remainder of term 1 due to coronavirus precautions

GPS and AIC First XI cricket – along with all school and senior competitions – is poised to be called off after Cricket Australia “strongly recommended” games be cancelled.

GPS and AIC First XI cricket – along with all school and senior cricket – is poised to be called off after advice from Cricket Australia due to coronavirus precautions.

Cricket Australia today said “strongly recommended all cricket played in the community be cancelled’’.

Both the elite schoolboy cricket competitions were set to announce they would adhere to the advice.

A decision on other schoolboy sport is expected this week.

In earlier news, sport at the all Catholic Secondary Schoolgirls’ Sports Association has announced it will crease sports for the rest of term one.

The First XI cricket was reaching an exciting conclusion after St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace joined surprise packets Brisbane Boys College as joint leaders in the exciting GPS First XV competition.

In AIC, St Patrick’s College were outright leaders one round from the end of the competition.

Both the GPS and AIC communities were able to enjoy sporting events throughout term 1 prior to the escalation of coronavirus concerns.

Three days ago crowds gathered for the prestigious GPS Head of the River regatta won by Brisbane Grammar School, and a week earlier there was another raucous GPS swimming carnival won by Nudgee College at Chandler. Churchie won the junior GPS carnival.

The AIC community was able to complete the swimming carnival.

The GPS activities scheduled for term one were rowing, sailing, volleyball, cricket, debating, music.

The Cricket Australia advice will also mean events such as the Bulls Masters Premier grade final between University and Ipswich Logan, scheduled to start this weekend, will not go ahead along with other grade finals.

Queensland Cricket has backed the decision by Cricket Australia to recommend the cancellation of all organized cricket within the community for the remainder of the 2019-20 season in response to the global coronavirus pandemic

“QC would recommend all forms of organized cricket in Queensland fall into line with CA’s advice, and we would urge our clubs and associations to stop training and playing from today,’’ Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Terry Svenson said.

The Raymont Shield women’s competition first grade grand final was decided on Sunday when Sandgate-Redcliffe beat the Gold Coast.

Queensland Cricket confirmed the following as premiers.

To Day Premiers

First Grade – University of Queensland

Second Grade – University of Queensland

Third Grade – Northern Suburbs

Fourth Grade – Northern Suburbs

Fifth Grade – Wynnum-Manly

Sixth Grade – Northern Suburbs [1]

Katherine Raymont Shield – Sandgate-Redcliffe (completed last weekend)

Jodie Fields Shield – Sunshine Coast (completed last weekend)
