St Joseph’s Nudgee College wins a second successive GPS swimming championship

St Joseph’s Nudgee College claimed a second successive GPS swimming championship this afternoon at Chandler, pipping a fast finishing Brisbane Grammar School and a probing Brisbane State High School.

St Joseph’s Nudgee College claimed a second successive GPS swimming championship this afternoon at Chandler, pipping a fast finishing Brisbane Grammar School and a probing Brisbane State High School.

In an absorbing afternoon of high class swimming, Nudgee (288.5) kept marginally ahead of their rivals BGS (261) who confirmed second place with a sweeping victory in the second last event of the carnival – the 4x50m open relay.

BSHS were third (254), then TSS (241), BBC (225), Churchie (193), an improving Gregory Terrace (190), Toowoomba Grammar School (155) and Ipswich Grammar School (115).

In the morning, Anglican Church Grammar School captured the junior GPS title from Nudgee College and Nudgee College.

TERRACE OLD BOYS AIM UP FOR OLYMPIC SWIMMING TRIALS

Two GPS records were broken in the open championship, both by BSHS swimmers Saxon Scheffler (13 years 50m butterfly) and a flying Jamie Bayliss (100m freestyle).

Bayliss, who swims at the Albany Creek Club, said while he had been training well, he did not foresee a record.

Scheffler and Bayliss were winners throughout the afternoon, with Bayliss claiming his preferred open butterfly title while Scheffler enjoyed individual wins in the 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 50 fly.

GPS CRICKET ROUND FIVE REPORT

The championship victory was reward for the depth of Nudgee College, and a triumph for individuals like Harrison Turner, Jaiden Marshall and Thomas Connellan.

But at no stage did Nudgee have a stranglehold on the championship.

Brisbane Boys College won the 50m freestyle shoot out early in the meet, collecting two firsts through Thomas Brentnall and Blake Jennison and a couple of minor placings.

When it came to backstroke, Toowoomba Grammar School swimmers Juert Eerkens and William Salmond gave their supporters plenty to cheer about with wins. while Brentnall collected his second win for BBC.

The much anticipated 100m freestyle was claimed by Nudgee with a couple of wins and some placings, while The Southport School’s Ben Reilly had a blinder in the open 100m final to beat BGS’s Hunter Pyne.

Jack Geyer (BSHS, 14 years 100m free) also had a good meet as did Sebastian Roy-Bryant of BGS.

BSHS had a whale of a breaststroke leg, spearheaded by Scheffler and Geyer who both won, while impressive 15 years Gregory Terrace breastsroker Felix Wilson plough home to win his event.

With Terrace old boy and current club mate Tom Neill watching on, Wilson, a youngster from the Rackley Centenary Club, also performed well in a series of other swims.

In the battle of the butterfly, BSHS refused to give in, winning three of five events.

Schleffer, Ryan Sui and Bayliss bobbed up first, while Brentnall (BBC) and Turner (Nudgee) claimed the remaining two first placings.

In the thrilling 200m freestyle contests, Alexander Fenton (BGS) won a ding-dong final.

But importantly for Nudgee, Max Pilgrim (14 years), Jaiden Marshall (13 years) and Connellan (15 years) came to the fore and it was this surge which was largely responsible for keeping Nudgee ahead of their rivals.

Then came the excitement of the relays and Nudgee did enough despite a BGS challenge.

Earlier in the meet Hadley Mayo of Churchie had a fantastic win in the gruelling 200m IM, beating Henry Sommerville of BGS.

Toowoomba Grammar’s Isaac Cooper also gave his mates from the Downs’ plenty to sing about with his effort in the open freestyle,
