A new Kmart store has been announced for a key south west Brisbane suburb.
Forest Lake Shopping Centre today revealed the arrival of Kmart, with the store opening early in 2021.
“At this stage it is still too early to discuss exact details, but we look forward to sharing more information with our community as plans are finalised,” the shopping centre said.
The discount store will replace a Target outlet.
The decision comes after Target’s parent company Wesfarmers decided to close more than 50 outlets in the coming months.
It has been a shock year for retailers with a raft of chains facing permanent closures including Ed Harry, Radio Rentals, Jeanswest, Cotton On, Sea Folly and Bardot.
A post on the shopping centre’s Facebook page today attracted more than 600 comments from locals of the family-orientated suburb.
“Omg I’m already spending my money there in my head as we speak... this could be very dangerous!” said Jane Rowan Hesse.
“Good to hear. Target was never a good fit for this area,” said Errol Madden.
“Hopefully they will have a decent men’s section that doesn’t just cater to young blokes. Missed Ed Harry when they closed down,” he said.
Forest Lake Shopping Centre also houses Aldi, Woolworths and Coles as well as 70 specialty stores.
