A national sports company has unveiled $1 million plans for a mega, Olympic-standard badminton facility which they believe could change the face of the sport in Brisbane ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games.
YY Sports Management submitted a proposal to the Brisbane City Council on June 15 for an eight-court badminton centre at 17 Boniface St, Archerfield.
The project would transform the current warehouse at the site into a facility the developers believe would be among the “best courts in Australia”.
Jingya Li from YY Sports Management, who have facilities around the country, said the Olympic Games being in Brisbane was the main reason behind the project.
“Badminton is usually one of the sports with five gold medals, so far it is very rare to find exclusive courts for hire in Brisbane and multipurpose sports centres are not very suitable for badminton because it may increase the possibility of injury,” she said.
“Our business can provide professional players training from other countries before Olympics, which can significantly reduce the burden of State Government and (Brisbane) City Council because it is not realistic to build an exclusive training building for players from cost-effective prospect.
“Badminton is also a low density and no body-to-body sport, it’s great for exercise and ideal for post Covid-19 era.”
Ms Li said she expected, once approved, to start construction later this year and be completed within two months.
She also said she wanted to give members of the facility, once it was up and running, somewhere they could play on the same quality facilities the best in the world showcase their talents on.
“Where the Olympic Champions play on our members play on,” Ms Li said.
“We have the best courts and equipment in Australia and secondly we will import high technology like AI to this project, of course the most important thing is we will implement professional management.
“We also chose Archerfield as it connects all south, west and east suburbs and CBD area is within 15km.”
Ms Li also said they were on the lookout for a sport professional manager to develop the business.
“We have already consulted lots of coaches and committee members of other clubs for suggestions,” she said.
Brisbane City Council are currently assessing the proposal.
