Wynnum residents furious at National Storage’s four-storey development proposal

Residents are up in arms over a proposal for a massive four-storey, 24-hour warehouse in a quiet bayside suburb.

Australian storage giant, National Storage, is the latest high-profile company wanting to join the rush of businesses to move into Brisbane’s bayside.

But their quest to do so has hit a major hurdle with local residents fiercely opposing their development application for a four-storey, 24-hour warehouse at 300 Tingal Rd, Wynnum.

More than 50 submissions opposing the proposal have been submitted since the application was made in April with the main concerns being noise in a 24-hour warehouse as well as traffic in a busy area of the bayside suburb.

“I strongly oppose this development due to the scale of it. There are residential houses including a daycare centre on the roundabout,” one submission against the project said.

“Most buildings are single or double story in the area and it will destroy the village feel of the bayside.

“The traffic is already a problem in this roundabout at peak times and this building

would obscure line of sight … There are industrial locations a 1km away or at Hemmant that would be more suitable rather than in a family suburb.

“Please do not allow this monstrosity.”

Councillor for Wynnum Manly (ALP) Peter Cumming said residents had made clear they were concerned about the 24-hour use of the warehouse so close to homes.

Brisbane City Council City Planning Chair Krista Adams said council’s planning team raised concerns with the applicant about several issues in May.

“This included the proposed setback on Mungala Street, stormwater management, vehicle access, noise and flood immunity of the proposal,” she said.

“Further concerns were raised with the applicant on June 29 around stormwater, vehicle access, noise and landscaping as they remained unresolved.

“The application is currently under assessment. No decision has been made.”

General manager for development at National Storage, Nick Crang, said the company was looking forward to joining the community.

“National storage is excited for the opportunity to repurpose an existing underutilised industrial location to one that better serves the local community and businesses,” he said.

Cr Adams and Cr Cumming encouraged residents to voice their opinion at epetitions.brisbane.qld.gov.au, which closes on August 16.
