Wynnum’s Michael Whitney has been remembered as a warm and caring man who cherished and loved his family more than anything – even sacrificing his dream to be with them.
Mr Whitney’s family and friends are in mourning after the 46-year-old was killed when his car fell and crushed him while fixing a tyre in the car park of the Manly IGA on Cambridge Pde and Stratton Tce at 2.26am.
Mr Whitney’s mum, Margaret, said her son was a caring person who often took younger men under his wing.
“He often helped younger men and supported them to find work and accommodation,” she said.
“He was multi-talented with extensive experience and many tickets in transport for which he was justifiable proud.
“He is very much loved by his extended family, who feel his loss keenly.
“He was hard working and independent and could always be called upon by anyone needing help of any kind.
“Michael was warm and caring and will be missed especially by his mother and brother, both Wynnum locals.”
Davyd Whitney said his brother was a person who loved Wynnum.
“He (Michael) lived here the majority of his life,” Davyd said.
“He spent a lot of his childhood at the local soccer club, Bayside United, and was always a talented player.
“He attended Wynnum (State) High and is an Iona (College) old boy.
“He was well known for his guitar playing and was always keen for a tune.
“He was invited to play for Liverpool in the UK but decided to stay close to his family, which were the most important part of his life, his mum, brother and later on his two boys.”
Investigations are continuing but his death is not being treated as suspicious.
