Creamy American style mac ‘n’ cheese, smashed burgers and unique deep dish pizzas – one of Brisbane’s newest restaurants is something the city may have never seen before.

Opening in Woolloongabba last month, the Mac From Way Back is the latest eatery to join the suburb’s hospitality resurgence following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Launched by owners Dane Coote and partner Quinty Tissen, who previously operated the business as a food truck for more than two years, the restaurant is one of four new venues to move into the popular Logan Rd precinct in recent months.

With a colourful menu which features everything from Nashville-style fried chicken, pizza, burgers, all different types of fries accompanied with a dessert menu to finish a meal off, the Mac From Way Back offers consumers something different in the precinct that is mostly fine dining.

Mr Coote said they needed to move into a permanent location after they could not cope with demand while operating the food truck.

“We used to do markets and festivals and kind of be in certain spots like that but during COVID we got around a whole lot more and it just went crazy, so we decided to open an actual restaurant,” he said.

“There’s nothing really like this in the area so that combined with the type of area as far as the amount of residential apartments nearby and also The Gabba being right there, we thought it was a perfect location.

“It seems like this area is really moving forward despite COVID.”

Having worked with food for many years, including time as a cook on oil rigs, Mr Coote said he was excited for the possibilities of the new restaurant.

And he said he expected the type of food to be a big hit with residents, including some items he believed would be fan favourites.

“Obviously the mac ‘n’ cheese, that’s number one and no one really does it in Brisbane,” he said.

“But our special deep dish pizzas I think will be huge and also our smash burgers. we’re the first ones to really do that in Brisbane as well I believe.”

Mac From Way Back is located at 31 Logan Rd, Woolloongabba.

More new restaurants are expected to open in nearby areas in the coming weeks.
