Controversial plans, almost five years in the making, to transform an iconic waterfront site on Brisbane’s bayside into the city’s newest brewery have been dumped.

The site of the old Wynnum Fish Markets at 18 Fox St, which closed more than eight years ago, was set for a major revamp after a development proposal was submitted to the Brisbane City Council from the Lawson Hospitality Group in 2018.

Despite Wynnum becoming a hub for new projects in recent years, the proposal received mixed feedback from bayside residents.

However, the application hit several delays along the way and had not yet received approval from council.

Now with local businessman Adam Lipke buying half of the land with original owner Sue Lawson, the plans for the site have changed with a brewery no longer in the works.

But the location is still set for a major revamp with the owners planning to a fish and chip shop, which will also include a beer garden and an ice cream parlour.

Demolition of the old structure at the site has already started with further plans expected to be submitted to council later this month.

Mr Lipke said the cost of the revamp was expected to be around $3 million with trading to start in the next 12 months.

“This area needs something like this, you can’t really get something like this right on the water until you get to the Redcliffe or Sandgate area,” he said.

“There’s a lot of money going into it as well, I’d expect this to impact the prices of housing in the surrounding area in a positive way and also we’d expect to be employing a lot of staff when we open, so it’s going to be a great boost for the bayside.”

Councillor for Wynnum Manly (ALP) Peter Cumming said he was still excited to see something happening with the site, which has sat unused and derelict since the close of the old fish markets in 2012.

“It will be great for the area to see something done with this site, which was closed some time ago,” he said.

A Brisbane City Council spokesman said the public notification period for 18 Fox Street, Wynnum has concluded with a majority of submissions in support of the proposal.

“A decision on the proposal has not yet been made,” the spokesman said.
