BRISBANE foodies and beer lovers could be in for a treat if a recent development proposal for a new and flashy waterside microbrewery is approved.

An application from the Lawson Hospitality Group for a new fish and chip restaurant, hotel, function facility and microbrewery at 18 Fox St, the site of the old Wynnum Fish Markets, currently being assessed by the Brisbane City Council.

Community consultation closed on September 30 with a bunch of submissions from nearby residents opposing the development due to noise and traffic concerns.

But after a story in the Wynnum Herald this week on those concerns, the proposal has received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

“Wynnum Needs some Bright New Ideas in the Area this will be Awesome to have a Nice Place to Eat & enjoy a Drink looking over the Historic wynnum Creek & out to the Bay — so much history which could be incorporated into the New Brewery -Wynnum Creek Pale Ale. Plus Serve some Great Seafood,” Keir James Houghton said on the Herald’s Facebook page.

“This is a fabulous addition to boost our area. I’ve been a resident for well over 20 years & its time we saw progression, great for the area with increased jobs. If you don’t want progression then move,” Debbie Smith also commented.

Those were just two of more than 180 comments in favour of the development and Lawson Hospitality Group general manager Mark Lawson has shared his plans for the site, if approved.

Mr Lawson emphasised he wanted a different type of venue which attracted people to visit the bayside.

“I want people to come here for a flavour experience, it’s not going to be the type of venue where people come to have 20 schooners,” he said.

“It’s more that they’ll come here to try the drinks, sit down and have a nice meal along the water.

“The type of brewing kit we will have is a small German brewing kit, it won’t impact on air quality at all, you’ll smell the fish and chips cooking more than you’ll smell anything from us brewing.”

Lawson also said they did not plan on having music and loud noise until late at night and wanted to share the plans so residents could see for themselves what it would look like.

“We want to be a place the community is proud of,” he said.
