What started as a joke between a couple of Queensland jewellery makers has now turned into their hottest seller.

Wynnum woman Venny Xanthopoulos and her small business Sparkle Monkey have been swamped with orders for toilet paper earrings since the coronavirus panic took hold.

“It started as a joke between my partner and I that we should make toilet paper earrings and take them to the markets,” she said

“Then I had a lady ask if she could have one Corona bottle and one toilet paper, so she walked off with a Corona bottle in one ear and a toilet roll in the other,” Ms Xanthopoulos said.

“She was in hysterics. She loved it.”

The couple have sold more than 40 pairs of toilet paper earrings in just over a week – and the orders are still rolling in.

Prices range from $12 for a pair made from recycled plastic, to $30 for a pair featuring a beaded toilet roll.

“And it’s all different generations that are buying them,” she said.

“I’ve got an order for 15 pairs and they’re from a lady who’s buying them as a gag gift for her staff.”

“And a lady who ordered the beaded ones was 60 plus.”

Given the dire shortage of toilet paper across the country, desperate times have prompted some people to consider desperate measures.

“People have asked me if they can use them,” Ms Xanthopoulos said.

“I said you can, but I don’t know how effective they’ll be.”
