A Taiwanese property giant’s investment in Brisbane continues to grow with their proposal to redevelop a bayside shopping centre set to go ahead.
Brisbane City Council last Friday approved the proposal from Shayher Properties for a revamp of the Wynnum Plaza, which is believed to cost almost $100 million.
The development at the Plaza, which opened in 1980, will include boutique cinemas, more retail space as well as eight apartment buildings featuring 184 units.
Shayher Properties, which own the Wynnum Plaza, is a private Taiwanese group which is also responsible for the $1 billion mixed-use Brisbane Quarter development, which included the opening of the W Hotel – the first five-star to open in Brisbane’s CBD in 20 years.
The news also comes after the operators for the new cinema in Wynnum’s CBD was announced on Saturday.
Councillor for Wynnum Manly Peter Cumming (ALP) said the Plaza upgrade was a major development for the area.
“It will mean better shops, new unites, better parking and a choice of cinemas,” he said.
“The fact that the developer of the massive Brisbane quarter in the CBD is also prepared to invest so much money in the Wynnum Plaza shows how much confidence the development community has in Wynnum West.”
As part of the project, Dan Murphy’s and the Wynnum Tavern will be relocated to a different position at the site.
The development also follows on from the start of construction on Arbor Park, a $37 million townhouse project, next to the Wynnum Plaza.
