A popular Brisbane boat club could be in store for its biggest revamp in its 50-year history with plans coming together for a multimillion-dollar project to improve its facilities.
The Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club, which is based at the Manly Harbour and has almost 11,000 members, is about to embark on a major renovation and expansion of its bar and restaurant facility – subject to final approval from the management committee.
Works are expected to start by March next year.
The project will be the non-for-profit club’s first major renovation since a refurbishment and extension of the clubhouse, including adding a deck overlooking the harbour, was completed in 2005.
MBTBC commodore Guy Houghton said the revamp was needed to cater for the club’s significant growth and development over the past two years.
He also said they were about to start the upgrade before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of its restaurant and bar for several months.
“The substantial growth the club has experienced in recent years has meant the current facilities are not adequate to cater for demand for our food and beverage operations, including as a function facility for the local community,” Mr Houghton said.
“As our facilities are ageing, much of it needs to be refurbished or replaced.
The giant upgrade has also been made possible following a $1 million grant from State Member for Lytton Joan Pease and the Queensland Government.
Mr Houghton also said the project was “shovel ready” pending approval from the management committee.
“The club has selected a builder for the project,” he said.
“The builder is very experienced in hospitality projects and has told the club it is ready to proceed.
“Importantly, the builder has reported that it will engage approximately 100 full-time workers on the project over the predicted 24-week construction phase.
“The construction is to be undertaken pursuant to plans and drawings prepared by an architect who specialises in hospitality construction.”

Mr Houghton also said MBTBC would become a hub for local community groups once the works were complete.
”We will employ 50 to 60 staff, double the staff we previously employed, and the magnificent facility will be a drawcard attracting people from outside of our local community,” he said.
