Fixing a bayside death trap, investing millions in local schools and clubs and ridding the beautiful foreshore of a nose-pinching stench, which has plagued the area for more than a year.

Those are just some of the priorities for the State Member for Lytton, Joan Pease (ALP), as she kicks-off her third term in office.

Ms Pease was officially declared the winner of the Lytton seat this week, beating the LNP’s Gordon Walters with more than 52 per cent of the votes.

JOAN PEASE’S TOP 10 PRIORITIES FOR THIRD TERM IN LYTTON

KEEPING BAYSIDERS SAFE FROM COVID-19

– Queenslanders and baysiders have done a terrific job during this pandemic, with no community transmission in Queensland for nearly two months. But if we look around the world we can see that this pandemic is far from over, with second and third waves forcing many countries back into lockdown. We have to keep working hard to prevent that from happening here.

CREATING JOBS FOR LOCALS

– We have a clear Economic Recovery Plan to create jobs as we recover from COVID-19. Investing in infrastructure such as the Lindum Station Upgrade, Cross River Rail, better school facilities, and community club upgrades means a big boost for the local economy. We’re supporting industry such as the Screen Queensland Studios at Hemmant as well as backing in local manufacturers to create jobs.

BACKING SMALL BUSINESSES

– Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Creating opportunities for small business to thrive is a priority to me. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 130 bayside businesses have received COVID Adaptation Grants of up to $10,000. I also look forward to continuing my work with local business and community leaders to put the Bayside on the map as a tourism and events destination. The Wynnum Fringe Festival this weekend is a great example of that collaboration in action.

INVESTING IN LOCAL SCHOOLS

– Every child deserves to learn in the best facilities. As part of Queensland’s Economic Recovery Plan, I’ll continue to deliver local school upgrades. That includes $200,000 to upgrade amenities at Manly West State School, $200,000 for upgrades at Wynnum West State School, $300,000 for Wondall Outside School Hours Care as well as airconditioning all state school classrooms, libraries, and staffrooms.

DELIVERING WORLD-CLASS HEALTHCARE

– We’re expanding Redland Hospital including a new ICU and 32-bed ward as well as 713 undercover parking spaces, meaning more baysiders will have access to a world-class hospital closer to home. I will also be working with WINNAM to turn the site of the old Wynnum Hospital into an integrated indigenous health and aged care hub, and I’ll continue to support our fabulous Wynnum-Manly Community Health Centre.

BOOSTING OUR FRONTLINE

– Our frontline staff have shown just how important they are during this pandemic. We’ve announced that we’ll hire an extra 2025 police staff, 9475 health staff, including 5800 nurses, and more than 6100 additional teachers and I look forward to delivering on that commitment to improve services for baysiders.

UPGRADING LINDUM STATION

– I’m very proud to have secured $45 million for an overhaul and accessibility upgrades at Lindum Station. It will see lifts installed as well as a new footbridge, a park ‘n’ ride expansion, bike parking and platform raising. I will also work with all levels of government on solutions to improve the Brisbane City Council road network.

BACKING BAYSIDE CLUBS

– We’re incredibly fortunate here to have so many fantastic clubs and organisations that tie our community together, and I’ll keep working every day to bring them the funding and support they need. I’ve secured $1 million for a redevelopment at the Moreton Trailer Boat Club and $300,000 for new lights at the Wynnum Manly Juniors just to name a few.

NEW BOATS FOR MARINE RESCUE VOLUNTEERS

– Manly’s Coast Guard – the QF2 Squadron – do an incredible job to keep local boaties safe but I know fundraising is tough. We’ll provide Queensland’s marine rescue services a $35 million funding package to replace ageing vessels and better integrate marine rescue services across the state. I’ll be working with our local volunteers as we deliver on this commitment.

SEAGRASS SMELL

– Locals would all be familiar with the detached sea flora along the foreshore causing a stink during the summer months. Cleaning it up is a Brisbane City Council responsibility, so I’m working with Cr Peter Cumming to get the Council administration to take action. However at the state government level, I’ve secured $20,000 for a scientific study for a long-term solution into mitigating the problem.
