Queensland construction giant BMD’s fairytale return home is coming together after the unveiling of designs for its new $50 million bayside headquarters.

Construction on the family-owned business’ five-storey, mixed-use development at 168 Bay Tce, Wynnum will start later this year.

The former historic Wynnum Baptist Church currently at the site is being moved to Iona College to make way for the mega project.

BMD’s new HQ will feature five floors of office space for the company as well as retail tenancies, including cafes and restaurants, on the ground floor.

BMD was started by Wynnum born-and-bred product Mick Power in 1979.

It has since become one of the biggest names in the industry around Australia and is coming off a year where it reaped $1.6 billion in revenue.

After formerly being based in Manly and now at the Port of Brisbane, BMD director Scott Power said they could not wait to be back in Wynnum.

“It means a lot to the company and to the family to be able to make this headquarters in Wynnum a reality,” he said.

“My dad has a long history with the suburb, growing up there, going to Wynnum State High School.

“We have a history here too and obviously so does BMD.

“So we thought it was the perfect opportunity to come back here, invest in the area with this project that we believe will be arguably the biggest and most significant in Wynnum’s history.

“We’re really invested in this community and love this community as our support for local sporting clubs and organisations for decades has shown.”

Mr Power said the new headquarters would be a historic moment for the bayside economy.

“The Wynnum project is estimated to support up to $130.4 million in economic output and 328 fulltime equivalent (FTE) jobs per annum throughout the construction period,” he said.

“The scale of office and retail floorspace onsite is expected to support a total of 420 FTE jobs, which is expected to generate an overall economic impact of $212.9 million per annum in economic output.”

He said having the new headquarters in Wynnum instead of relocating to the Brisbane CBD would provide employees with better opportunities while also aligning with the company’s “family feel”.

Construction is expected to take between 12 to 18 months.

i2C Architects senior associate, Katie Rankine, said the design drew inspiration from the beautiful natural context and ecology of the Wynnum foreshore and Moreton Bay.
