Queensland construction giant BMD has revealed it will return to its roots after announcing plans build a new headquarters on Brisbane’s bayside.
The company, which started and operated on the bayside until growing too big for its Manly location four years ago, is in advanced planning stages for a new base in the rapidly growing Wynnum CBD.
BMD director Scott Power said BMD had already received approval from the Brisbane City Council for a new building at the site of the historic former Wynnum Baptist Church on Bay Terrace but they were also looking at other options in the CBD.
The plans for the new headquarters is for a five-storey building on Bay Terrace, which would also feature retail space.
BMD is currently located at the Port of Brisbane.
Mr Power, whose dad Mick ran the business until recently retiring, said BMD returning to Wynnum would be one of the biggest moments in the suburb’s recent development and retail boom.
“It would mean a lot for this to happen, not only for the area but for us considering we are a bayside business and we have a lot of history in the area,” he said.
“But imagine how much this would mean for the businesses, cafes, restaurants and everything in the Wynnum CBD.
“To have more than 350 people coming here for work would benefit the area in such a huge way.”
Mr Power said they were still sorting through some issues but expected to have finalised plans in the coming months.
The news comes despite some backlash from bayside residents over plans to relocate the former Wynnum Baptist Church with the Wynnum Manly Historical Association starting a petition to keep the 109-year-old building in the area.
Mr Power said the building’s relocation was decided a decade ago and it was now up to council to nominate a suitable location.
He also said the building was offered to the current Wynnum Baptist Church on Kianawah Rd but they declined.
