A giant Queensland construction company is closer to bringing a massive development to the site of a historic church on Brisbane’s bayside.
BMD has owned the land where the former Wynnum Baptist Church sits at 164-166 Bay Terrace for decades.
The church was built in 1912 and was also the place many bayside community groups called home until the Baptist Church realised the Bay Terrace location was inadequate to continue services and moved to Kianawah Rd, Wynnum West, in 2006.
BMD director Scott Power said the iconic church would be relocated to a site nominated by Brisbane City Council.
He also said the company was close to deciding final plans for the prime Wynnum CBD site with picturesque views of Moreton Bay.
“We’ve already got approval for a combined residential and commercial tower on the site, but now we also have approval for it just to be residential rather than both,” he said.
“So now we’re just deciding what we will do with it.
“We are probably a few weeks away from doing that.”
Mr Power said the site was an ideal location to continue Wynnum’s development boom.
When BMD decides on its final plans for the location, it would be another major addition to the rising bayside suburb’s skyline after the construction of several residential towers in recent years.
It would also add to the changing demographic in the area with the bayside experiencing an influx of young families and could be a significant boost for the retail scene with a spate of entertainment venues and new businesses opening.
Those business included new pinball bar, Multiball Mania, and new cafe, Coffee n Bricks, which both opened at the weekend.
