Wreckers have moved in on a decommissioned soft-drink factory on Brisbane’s southside, the first step in a two-year transformation which will see the site become a new homemaker centre anchored by Harvey Norman and Domayne.
Harvey Norman purchased the 23,736 sqm site at 572 and 588 Kessels Rd, Macgregor, in late-2016 from Japanese drinks giant Asahi Beverages.
Asahi previously operated a soft-drink factory for wholly-owned subsidiary Schweppes on the site.
After a four years sitting idle, Harvey Norman has finally sent in the dozers to begin work on its new Harvey Norman Macgregor Homemaker Centre.
A spokesman for Harvey Norman told the Southern Star demolition work on the site is expected to conclude in December.
There will then commence a two-year construction phase, with Harvey Norman hoping to throw open the doors to its new centre in November or December, 2023, weather and suppliers permitting.
Once fully operational, the centre is expected to support more than 200 jobs, the spokesman said.
In addition to Harvey Norman and Domayne anchoring the site, there will also be two 500 sqm tenancies and approximately nine other smaller tenancies.
However, the spokesman noted that the final configuration was not set in stone and there could be greater or fewer tenancies, for instance by merging the two 500 sqm tenancies into a single 1000 sqm space.
A previous Harvey Norman store at Macgregor, located up the road at 555 Kessels Rd, closed in late-2018.
An existing Harvey Norman at Westfield Garden City is a high-performer for the company, the spokesman said.
“However, our preferred location is somewhere we own with like retailers,” he said.
