The Lucky Cat Cafe Annerley put on sale by owner Katie Phelan

One of Brisbane’s most unusual cafes has been put on the market for the bargain price of $60,000.

The owner of a beloved ‘cat cafe’ on Brisbane’s southside, where animal lovers can sip a latte while cuddling up to feline friends says it’s “bittersweet” having to put the business she founded and devoted her past six years to on the market.

Katie Phelan, of The Lucky Cat Cafe at Annerley, told City South News the decision was pre-empted by she and partner Wade Felsch’s need to be closer to family in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales.

“It’s pretty devastating to say goodbye to everything you’ve worked for over the years,” she said.

“The Queensland border issues of the last two years have made things difficult.

“The whole uncertainty of the last couple years took its toll financially and emotionally.

“We’ve survived a whole pandemic.

“Everything is back opening up, it feels like an accomplishment we’ve survived.

“We felt it was time for us.”

Ms Phelan said the eight rescue cats which call The Lucky Cat Cafe home will either be adopted out or come with her back home.

She said she was keen to work with future owners to make sure the cafe’s relationship with animal shelters continued to further the business’ legacy of loving unloved cats.

Ms Phelan said it was business as usual in the cafe in the meantime – “It could take a week, it could take six months” – and encouraged punters to make a booking if they’ve been thinking about going but were yet to make the time.

She said if a buyer couldn’t be found, it was possible the cafe would have to close.

According to The Lucky Cat Cafe’s commercial listing, the business is one of only 10 ‘cat cafes’ in Australia fusing retail, food and beverage and animal experiences.

“Various revenue streams in the business include retail accessories and clothing for both people and pets, homewares, popular animal experiences and party packages where customers can chill out and connect with the loveable animals,” the listing says.

“The cafe menu offers a selection of hot and cold drinks and cakes to round off the experience.”

The Lucky Cat Cafe’s asking price is $60,000 including stock.
