Replay: Queensland School Basketball Finals - Cantebury College v Brisbane State High School (Girls)

A massive fourth-quarter comeback from a former GPS powerhouse was the highlight on day one of The Champion Basketball School of Queensland as the competition’s favourites all shine.

Brisbane Boys’ College, who struggled this year in the GPS, saved their best performance of the year for today, fighting back from almost 20 points down to beat Cairns State High 94-93 to stay undefeated.

Looking to build on an impressive first win over Varsity, BBC fell behind early and looked down before Bayley Judson (28 points) and Thomas Hinson (24 points) helped their team overcome the large deficit.

Earlier in the day, a draw between Villanova College and three-time CBSQ champions St James College got the tournament off to the perfect start.

Villa led by three with just seconds remaining but a buzzer-beating three-pointer from St James’ Thon Guet helped his team avoid a loss.

In the same pool, one of the Boys Championship Division’s favourites in St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace finished the first day undefeated, as did GPS premiers Churchie and other GPS schools Brisbane State High School and The Southport School.

While in the Girls Championship Division, defending champions Hillcrest Christian College and 2018 champions St Margaret Mary’s from Townsville look destined to face each other for the title after dominant performances on day one.

TODAY’S RESULTS

BRISBANE SHS DEF CANTERBURY COLLEGE 68-41 (Girls Champ Division)

Alannah Anthony and Summah Hanson have starred as Brisbane State High School have ended the first day of action at CBSQ with a 27-point win over Canterbury College at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre.

State High, who are always contenders at the annual state championship tournament, needed an improved performance after a loss earlier in the day against King’s Christian College, and that’s exactly what coach Steve Edwards got.

The game was close for most of the first half before State High pulled away in the third quarter and Canterbury couldn’t find their way back.

Anthony led the way with 18 points and Hanson had 16.

For Canterbury, it was twins Lisa and Mary Barnett-Keresoma with 11 and 16 points respectively.

Hillcrest pulled off an upset on day one of The Champion Basketball School of Queensland tournament with an impressive win over GPS school, Ipswich Grammar.

The school from the Gold Coast bounced back after a two-point loss to Mountain Creek State High School this morning with the 15-point victory, which gives them a chance of fighting to make it through to the crossovers.

Reuben Nicholas topscored with 24 points while Tyler O’Neill had 21 points for Hillcrest.

Vesilije Ercag had 24 points for Ipswich with Xavier Bricknall-Lehmann scoring 13.

NUDGEE COLLEGE DEF SOUTHPORT SHS 82-77 (Boys Champ Division)
