Churchie complete undefeated season with dominant victory over Toowoomba Grammar School

Churchie have continued their dominance of GPS Basketball after a win in the final round capped off an undefeated season and helped claim back-to-back premierships for the third time in school history.

They were dealt all kinds of hurdles – from a global pandemic to deficits in the fourth quarters of big games and more – but still nothing could stop Churchie from completing a dominant, undefeated season to claim back-to-back GPS Basketball premierships.

Churchie were hellbent on winning this year’s competition outright, after a tie with St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace last year, and they showed it.

The CJ Bruton-coached side were clinical during their 2020 campaign, rolling through teams outside of the top four, and also making the critical plays at crucial moments in clashes against other schools fighting for this year’s premiership.

Having fought back after trailing in the final period of match-ups against The Southport School and Gregory Terrace, Churchie easily took care of Brisbane State High School last week and sealed their fifth title since 2008 with a 94-64 win over Toowoomba Grammar School on the road yesterday.

Churchie senior Aiden Summerfield said this year’s premiership was something he would never forget.

“Holding a trophy had never felt so good or so deserved,” he said.

“With the aid of Head Coach CJ Bruton and his assistant coaches Adrian Day, Darren Marchant and Drew Summerfield, we came out on top as the most dominant team in the 2020 GPS season.

“As an experience this will never be forgotten by neither our seniors or a rising stars and we will remember the not only the wins and the premiership but also the great group of boys.

“A close knit team that battled through a global pandemic to stick together and come out stronger together.”

Churchie’s director of basketball, Trent Goodrick, said these back-to-back premierships were the culmination of four years of hard work, from everyone involved, including seven seniors and four coaches.

“With lots of ups and downs along the way as well as lessons learnt by the young men of Churchie,” he said.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys, the school and in particular the basketball coaching staff have helped turned into men through the journey.
