A pair of talented brothers, who have featured on some of the sport’s biggest stages, lead a star-studded team of the decade for the most successful school in GPS Basketball over the past 10 years.

Anglican Church Grammar School, or Churchie as they’re known, have been dominant in the elite school competition in recent times, tied with Brisbane State High for winning the most premierships from 2010-2019 with three to their name.

However, it is their team of the decade which stands out with stars at every position from an NBA G-League player at point guard followed by stars who have featured in the National Basketball League, at the US collegiate level and also won a championship in the Queensland Basketball League.

Starting Five:

William McDowell-White - Point Guard (2015)

- Regarded as probably the best player to feature in the GPS Basketball competition over the past 10 years, William McDowell-White Churchie claim back-to-back premierships in 2013 and 2014. The dynamic guard, who has incredible athleticism and a basketball IQ to match, has gone on to big things since finishing school - playing for the Sydney Kings in the NBL before playing professionally in Germany and then being signed by the Houston Rockets NBA G-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. McDowell-White recently announced he would be returning to the G-League and is hopeful of a call up to the NBA in the coming years.

Daryl McDowell-White - Shooting Guard (2014)

- Darryl McDowell-White joins his younger brother to form a star-studded backcourt, which not only treated Churchie fans for several years but also made the jaws drop of basketball fans around the state and country - winning state championships for the Southern Districts Spartans and representing Queensland at national tournaments. McDowell-White - a guard with the ability to play above the rim - could also get hot from the perimeter and dominate teams with his outside shot. However, he and his brother also formed a tough defensive backcourt, with their pressure leading to highlight plays that they have been known for.

Sean Bairstow - Small Forward (2018)

- The younger of the Bairstow brothers who feature on this list, Sean is currently showcasing his skills at the NCAA Division 1 level in US college basketball for Utah State University. But before college, Bairstow, a lengthy and crafty athlete who can both play at the guard and forward spots, starred in the GPS Basketball competition. Bairstow also impressed in the Queensland Basketball League for the South West Metro Pirates and represented Queensland throughout his junior career.

Jarred Bairstow - Power Forward (2010)

- One of the hardest working players you’ll come across in Queensland basketball, Jarred Bairstow played in school’s 2008 GPS Basketball premiership, along with older brother and former NBA player Cameron Bairstow. Bairstow, who now plays for the Brisbane Capitals in the Queensland State League, went on to be a part of the Brisbane Bullets NBL squad in the first year back in the league in 2016. The man, who could play any position from small forward to centre, represented Queensland in his junior career and has been among the best players in the state’s senior competition for years.

Ben Volkman - Centre (2014)

- A big man who protected the paint in Churchie’s two consecutive premierships in 2013 and 2014, Ben Volkman was an unsung hero of the school’s team during his final years. Volkman represented his state during his junior career and also was part of several state junior championships, alongside the McDowell-White brothers at the Southern Districts Spartans and also played two years at the collegiate level in the US. Volkman also had one of his best years in the QBL last year, winning a championship with the Brisbane Capitals.
